I'm an analytical chemist by training and vocation. Personally, I'd like to see all the Ultrasensitive PSA machines thrown into the ocean. For practical purposes, <0.1 is probably good enough for 99% of us, and all the rest of the BS numbers just serve to stir us up unnecessarily.
Wow, maybe a bit too drastic but I agree with halbert that the accuracy of ultrasensitive PSA machines at these extremely low levels is not as good as you might think. External quality assessments of PSA labs in Sweden (they send known serum samples to all labs and compare the results) have resulted in that the lowest reported value should be 0.1 for normal post surgery follow up purposes.
Could it be commercialism that has led manufacturers to set the lower limit of detection to ridiculously low values. Levels at which they can not guarantee that they measure correctly?
