Hi guys

I am going too have a lupron injection on 5/7. I have always wonder what the chances are of
having a heart attack. This shot will be my 5th and will be on lupron for 15 months { 3 mons shots }
Some times I fill like I am playing Russian Roulette. My uro tells me I will be ok, but this is always
in the back of my mind.

I’m not on ADT but definitely will be with time. My MO says a heart disease/ADT connection has not been shown to be true. But to be honest, I think I would rather die from a heart attack than PCa.

So Lupron may increase your chance of a heart attack? Big deal. I'd rather have zero psa results. There is no real substitute for control of PC in many guys and it works. There are plenty of things everyone can do to minimize heart issues. Eat a heart healthy diet & exercise. That's what I do and I am enjoying life day by day. In fact, today I came to work at noon, had lunch and now I'm here on the Forum instead of working. Guess I'll have to leave soon.

The connection is that when men are on long term HT the reduced T slows their metabolism causing weight gain and the associated issues. If one controls weight the risk is greatly diminished, which isn't high in the first place..

I told my VA primary care doc I was expecting to start ADT soon and queried the potential for increased heart risk. Her take is that most men who are on ADT are also at an age where their heart risk may elevate simply due to the increased risk that comes with age, even if not on ADT.

A Cautionary Tale: I had one 6-month injection of Eligard (Lupron equivalent) in 2014. My T level, a lackluster 243 to begin with, dropped to a low of 21 in 6 months, rallied to 145 after a year and then slowly fell off again to the current 68, measured just today. In essence, I never really recovered from that one injection.

In the past year I developed a totally unrelated brain tumor, an astrocytoma - not a PCa met. The tumor, located on top of the left thalamus, is near, but apparently not affecting, the pituitary, and care was taken during radiation to avoid the pituitary.

I believe that I had an unfavorable reaction to ADT. Has anyone else had a similar experience?

I have been on and off ADT for several years, and to mitigate the heart issue I went to a Cardiologist, who also has PCa, and he performed Nuclear Stress tests and Echo Cardiograms on me and has been monitoring my Cardiovascular system from day one. His take on the heart and Lupron is to eat healthy, do cardio exercises, (not weight, because he said that weight lifting only makes you pretty, the cardio keeps you healthy). I do both and watch my eating, that is a real big key to keep your weight down, cardio and diet. Best of luck.

The risk seems to be only in men who have had previous evidence of CV disease.
