How many of us were aware that the metal gold actually has medical uses? The article below discusses some of them.
For exanple:
"Gold compounds have increasingly been used to treat several types of cancer, the most impressive being its use in chemotherapy for tumors." (Although the article then goes on to say there can be side effects with this approach).
"One promising breakthrough is the use of gold nanoparticles … researchers are carrying out clinical trials for a drug delivery system using tiny gold particles to target potent anti-cancer drugs with minimal side effects."Especially interesting to us is the comment made in the article about
the use of gold in the treatment of PCa. (Yes, it's true!)
Specifically:
"The use of gold is encouraging in the treatment of prostate cancer where injection of microscopic gold pellets helps to inhibit tumor growth. The position of the gold grains can be detected using X-rays, allowing doctors to target the prostate position within one or two millimeters.”The article then goes on to discuss the use of injectable gold in the treatment of certain other conditions such as HIV/AIDS and rheumatoid arthritis.
Apparently some medical treatments are as good as gold!
