Here's a little bit of fluff for a Friday. Something to lighten the mood a little. A little bit of trivia found websurfing recently, perhaps worth a smile.
But it's also an example of how something small and unimportant in itself can, interestingly, lead to a big change in society's attitude about
something.
In this case regarding female swimwear.
Certainly the two-piece swimsuit, of which the bikini is a form, is the modern standard for female swimming attire, and is acceptable everywhere.
That wasn't always the case for the bikini. In fact, back in the 1950s society's thoughts on the bikini, at least in the U.S., were actually rather mixed. In some quarters at that time the suit was even considered in questionable taste. Certainly not something "proper" girls would ever wear into the water!
Then came singer Brian Hyland's number one pop tune hit "Itsy Bitsy Teenie Weenie Yellow Polka Dot Bikini" in June 1960.
Seemingly at first no more than a cutesy little pop chart tune, that one little song evidently had the impact of turning opposition to the bikini swimsuit on its head.
"At a time when bikini bathing suits were still seen as too risqué to be mainstream, the song prompted a sudden take off in bikini sales and is credited as being one of the earliest contributors to the acceptance of the bikini in society. The early 1960s saw a slew of surf movies and other film and television productions that rapidly built on the song's momentum." Source:

So the next time at a pool or beach, when you observe a comely bikini-clad young miss, perhaps you may recall that it was a clever little goldie-oldie song, from decades ago, that is at least partially responsible for her rather pleasant current appearance.
And, of course, there is only one way now to appropriately end this fun thread on a Friday.
Namely, to give a listen to:
