Back and shoulder pain after HDR brachytherapy

Hi everyone—
Husband finally got treatment on July 25. Everything went well but he is dealing with upper back, neck, shoulder and, to a lesser extent, hip soreness and discomfort. Can’t get comfortable sitting or lying down. Wondering if anyone else had same issue. It could be related to positioning during procedure or possibly anesthesia...?

Other side effects/symptoms have been minimal so far, thankfully.

He’s pretty tired too, but we expected that. Has to have same HDR Brachy procedure again next week. Hope to figure this out so he can maybe avoid it next time.

I had back pain from all lying down I had to do for the first session of my HDR brachy. The second session was much better since we supported my back better. I didn't have any issues lying down, but sitting was tough at first since my perineum was sore from where the implant was sutured. I learned pretty quickly that I couldn't plop into a chair when I was sitting down.

I had frequent and burning urination after the procedure, but it went away pretty quickly.

Ok thank you Michael. It makes sense that it’s related to positioning. It’s weird that we’re on day four and it’s much worse today. We’ll have to ask doctor to try something different, if he even can. He’s really wiped out today too, sleeping endlessly. But I guess that’s part of it.

The radiation could be adding to the tiredness. That should get better soon. A bit of walking might help both the fatigue and the back problem.

I hope you can get him up and get him to exercise. Now is not the time to take it easy.How are you at channeling a boot camp drill sargeant?

Try some ibuprofen if it's okay with your doc. it's done wonders for my injured shoulder and I recently realized my lower back doesn't hurt anymore!

Haha! He would probably say I’m a good drill sargeant Allen ;)
He just took the dog for a walk on the beach. Seems a little better for doing so.
Hopefully a little better each day. I’ll make sure he gets out.

Can I ask you a question ...I am doing brachytherapy next week .
.how was it really ...I am very nervous ....from what I am told either u get a spinal or epidural ....how long in the or Can you give me details please ..drs only tell you somuch appreciate it very much

I had HDR in February and did not experience those symptoms. I did get active right away, played golf the day after each procedure, actually played golf every day after.

The procedure was a non-event mostly. The second procedure I had more pain and asked for pain meds but unfortunately, I reacted poorly to the pain meds, probably allergic to them.

Urinary burning was the most uncomfortable part but my doc had me take double doses of AZO and no discomfort the second time. Also, perineum was pretty sore for a week.

I do think we all get a bit fatigued and I suspect it is emotional tiredness, I had six months of worry and at times fear and that can drag you down. However, once I had made the choice and had the treatment back to normal. Denis

For what it’s worth, my two HDR sessions (2 weeks apart) were like two completely different procedures altogether. Tell the anesthesiologist, the oncologist, etc. My first procedure was pretty brutal, but I felt pretty good after 3 hours or so. Even went to a Christmas party that night. The second one didn’t hurt at all, but I found myself drained and taking naps for a week after.
