Movember 2018

I always take a pass Movember. The whole idea of it doesn’t really excite me. But also, I would have to start in August for anyone to notice the beard thing on me.

Not surprising. Participants start the month with a clean-shaven face, then grow their whatever during the month. It's the CHANGE which makes it effective and makes people take notice...and sparks the dialogue! Go for it! Be an impetuous for CHANGE. Or as Gandhi put it, "Become the change you wish to see in the world." Don't you want to see more PC awareness? Make it happen.

I am way ahead on this. I stopped shaving when I got out of the army in 1975 and have had full facial hair ever since.

I spend the money that would have gone to razors, shaving cream, etc. on good beer.

You will definitely be a "Mo Bro" when you start the month clean-shaven and then grow it back...you are definitely gonna generate some discussion, so get your "elevator speech" ready about what you want to say to spread PC awareness! Go Bro! (Just "having" facial hair isn't a thing...spark change!)

Blackjack, since you linked this post to mine I'll go with this.....
I appreciate the Blah....really I do... It moved me to start using my brain and to stay connected to this conversation.
Movember is not just about PC awareness. It's about men's awareness for all men's health issues, and that's great. Any way to create more dialogue between men on these issues can't hurt...can it?
Without trying to offend here , I am going to throw out this question. Does Movember bring more awareness to PC or does it water down the message by lumping it into a broader category?
September is Prostate cancer awareness month. Should we be trying to bring more awareness about that? This past Major league Baseball season the teams wore light blue gear for a weekend. It was to be about bringing awareness to "Prostate Cancer". The commentating on the games I watched was more about men's health issues. PC was hardly mentioned.
Now when the players wear pink, it's all about breast cancer, not women's health. Pink is everywhere Football, baseball, Basketball, Hockey, Tennis, golf, ping pong, tiddlywinks, and on and on. That's great! Women are better at that kind of thing and it's not a competition, it's awareness.
My point is ….if you want to bring awareness to PC "specific", start promoting the light blue ribbon. Put it on your Facebook, put it on your car, put on a light blue cap with a light blue ribbon. It's all about the ribbon and the color. What do you think of when you see a pink ribbon.....that's right you know..... I don't even have to say it.
Push the ribbon, push the color!
Better yet.....grow a beard or shave your beard in November and wear a light blue ribbon.
That's how the pink ribbon worked and I do think that the PC ribbon is gaining ground. When did we ever see a light blue ribbon or the color light blue worn on a baseball field?
Blah... Blah... Blah...is correct. Talking to men hardly works. I think the ribbon might?

would anyone be surprised if Fresh and Blackjack were the same person...not a slam...apparently no rules are broken as I'm sure they(Mods) are aware of the confusion...that good ole whatzit may bring to the newbies...It does pose a question tho...why would anyone care what a person who does that says about anything...with all the AKA's..".they" are difficult to ignore...and at times quite amusing...but it would be interesting...tho certainly not needed to know the why...having said that...it is comforting to know we all do know the why??….plus it takes the heat off of others...who actually do have real health issues ...Tarry on...

Nobody here is whining, merely expressing opinions. And everyone has a right to be as public, or private , as they feel comfortable with, when it comes to their disease, whether it’s PC or any other. Without getting criticized. Growing facial hair to create a conversation is a very public action. Not for everyone.

I suggest we keep it general, not personal. Let’s continue a worthwhile discussion, by bringing the tone down a notch, and keeping it constructive.

Glad you asked. This is great discussion/dialogue topic...and one I hope to educate lots of people about during Movember.

Is sounds like you unfamiliar with the difference between "widespread PSA screening" and "PSA testing?" Don't feel badly if you mix the two...many uninformed people do. "Widespread PSA screening" implies mass screening of uneducated men; there's not a professional medical organization or cancer society today that supports that...none. That is exactly what was at the root of the PC overtreatment fiasco of the previous 2 decades. Today, that's seen as unethical. Today's ethical doctors adhere to their professional society guidelines and have a conversation with their male patients about their aging prostates and PSA testing, and the pros & cons of testing and treatments, and then help them make their own decision about whether to test or not. I am a full proponent of the PSA test, and today's guidelines.

Great question. One I'm prepared for, and one that all Mo Bros should be prepared to address...

Exactly! It is fine to be passionate and encouraging about involvement in various charitable events. What I personally resent is when someone (anyone) tries to preach to me and make me feel somehow inferior when I don't choose to endorse or participate in THEIR cause. We all have the right to participate in these things as we desire and, at least on this site, to do it without criticism or judgement. Over the years I've found the best way to get involvement in anything is through encouragement and education rather than intimidation and shaming which typically have the effect of moving people away from the desired action.

I've really tried to take a back seat in these discussions thus I don't post nearly as much (life is too sweet and pure to deal with carp), so I hadn't noticed before the resemblance someone has to both NKinney and to JackH.
Hmmm, same abrasive tone, talking down or insulting others.

It looks like a spot on observation of familiarity between users.

Plus, at 11:57 someone called someone else a name, a fairly mild name, but clearly an insulting one. And clearly bucking rules.

As for Movember, to each their own.
If you feel like you make a difference, more power to you.
But me, my world is very small and I'll just love and care about those close to me.
They know I have cancer, even if they don't check in that often.
