Social Drinking Days Prior To RP

I’m six days away from my radical prostatectomy. Those of you that have had surgery...is it best to stay away at this stage from any alcohol, thinking glass of wine, glass of beer, etc. Did it make any difference at all?

Well, ethanol is an industrial solvent, tissue preservative, and a fuel for internal combustion engines. So, I don’t know why anyone would put in their bodies, but that’s just my view.🙂

The pre-surgery advice that you will often find on the pages of HW/PC is to “empty your prostate as often as possible.” The reason, of course, it that it may be some number of weeks or more—with all the sensitive recovery and whatnot—before you have the opportunity to do so again.

That being said, alcohol and sex don’t always go together well…so, prioritize!

If you're drinkin'.....tell the surgeon and anesthesiologist before you go in. They won't hold it against you. But it's information they'd want to know.

Just sayin' that because that's the kind of question I'd ask back when I drank heavily. Not sayin' you do. But if so....just tell 'em. That's all. (It's also the kind of thing I wouldn't have wanted them knowing).

It's bad form to reply twice to the same post, but here I go:

General rule is no alcohol 24 hours prior to surgery. Some surgeons and anesthesiologists want you to dry out longer than that. Among the questions your prep nurse will ask you just before they put you under is when was the last time you had a drink. You want the answer to be one that they like. So call your surgeon's office and ask what their guideline is. If you've been given an instruction sheet on pre-surgery activity (what/when to eat/drink, etc.), see if the answer's there already.

The only thing you shouldn’t do in moderation at this stage is ... yes that!!! Time to get busy! Don’t waste time with alcohol.
