OT: Jeopardy! and pancreatic cancer

I just learned that the original Jeopardy! host, Art Fleming, passed away from pancreatic cancer, which current host Alex Trebek is battling. Morbid coincidence.

Howard, maybe. Pancreatic cancer (at least the most common version) has one of the highest mortality rates of all cancers, and one of the shortest typical lifespans after diagnosis.

I've read that Alex is going to start another round of chemo so wishing him the best as he continues his battle. And we're going to tomorrow's Jeopardy taping, so hoping to see him doing well. I have tremendous respect that he keeps working while going through this.

I watch Jeopardy almost every day. It's very frustrating because there are so many questions/answers I know I used to know, but can't bring up in my brain in the moment. Can't blame Lupron because it started well before that - but it's still a convenient excuse. 😉

mattam, I have the same problem. I'm better at Final Jeopardy since I have more time to think. (Although I'm known to hit pause during Final Jeopardy to give myself more time to think.) My brother was a Jeopardy champ back in the 80s...he was only a few years out of college at the time and I'm sure his mind was at its quickest back then.

I got rid of my TV about 30 years ago so I haven't seen that show since the 80s but I was wondering if anyone has compiled the data to determine the mean age of winners.

The Wikipedia article below, about the contestants who have appeared on Jeopardy, includes the birth dates for a good number of them, so it provides a start to an answer and at least gives a general picture of their ages.

One would have to go through the individual biographies listed, collect the birth dates provided and then do the math, to get an average:

I think the ideal age of a Jeopardy contestant is in their 30s. First off, you're still sharp at that age. But there's also a lot of popular culture and history questions that span the 50s to the present--I think when you're in your 30s you at least have picked up some of the older stuff, while also being familiar with new things.
