This essay appeared in this weekends edition of the Wall Street Journal..To me, it raised some very valid issues concerning the money being spent on cancer research verses the progress being made in curing the disease..If you open the link, you will get a one-time pass to read the article without a subscription...

I read the first part but couldn't figure out how to get free access. The author mentioned very early detection, but for PCa that just opens the Task Force worm can again. A cure for PCa seems like a pipe dream unless there's an amazing development of some sort. For men with higher risk PCa, I think there is still an expectation for a return of the cancer 8 to 10 years after a "successful" RP. Not sure how that works with RT.

With PCa typically showing up later in life, I think the best efforts might be directed at managing PCa so we can out last it, and die from something else.

I could cut and paste the entire article to this board but that's a sure rule violation...The same author wrote a book "The Emperor Of All Maladies" which Ken Burns made into a TV (PBS) presentation in 2015.. The author feels that developing drugs and treatments to "manage" (not cure) PC and other cancers at tremendous cost is not the correct approach...

I can't read it. Already tried to read The Wall Street journal too often. I have enough subscriptions that I'll have to pass on that one

I read "The Emperor of All Maladies" a while back. My big take away was that understanding exactly what cancers are eluded humankind for millennia, much less developing effective treatment for diseases whose nature was not understood at all. Still not fully understood. Sometimes I wonder if the "Cut, Radiate, Poison" paradigm does not apply to the ADT option for PCa treatment. Maybe add a forth option "Starve." Thinking about it, I don't know of other cancers where trying to "Starve" just the bad actors alone is an option? PCa treatment options seem unique. I have a good friend, diagnosed with pancreatic cancer. His sole, passing quickly option is "Poison."
