Love him or hate him he was a brother in this fight. This news just came out and no cost has been given as yet. I know he was on active surveillance for years and they have never been treated, I’m not sure. He was a patient of the urologist that diagnosed me.

He was quite the character - made me laugh. Memorable one was about Viagra. He went on and on about guys seeing an advertisement, getting a script, and then going home and pestering their "poor" wives. " Had me rolling in laughter.

I always enjoyed his radio show. I saw the news earlier today but didn't know he had prostate cancer.

Found this at the NY Times, reminds me a bit of Steve Jobs. Very sad:

"In March a biopsy confirmed that Mr. Imus, the outspoken talk show host, had Stage 2, or intermediate, prostate cancer. Though he was initially advised to begin radiation treatments, he has so far chosen to treat the disease holistically. He has been dutifully ingesting habanero peppers and Japanese soy supplements as part of a regimen partly devised by his wife, a natural foods proponent, and monitored by a urologist at Columbia University Medical Center... Mr. Imus said his holistic regimen appeared to be having a beneficial effect. In initial follow-up tests, key markers — including his PSA levels — had dropped. Although he is forgoing more conventional treatments for now — like other patients, he worries about side effects like impotence (or, as he puts it, “the dead noodle”) — he is not ruling them out."

Hard for me to feel too awful bad for someone who makes to 79. Seems like a full life.

I don't know what the cause of death was but he was almost 11 years since diagnosis with favorable intermediate prostate cancer. Hopefully he didn't suffer from advanced prostate cancer. I had read the NYTIMES article about 2 years ago.

A study of the metastasis risk of men who had the Decipher genomics test on their RP tissue found that for the G7 (3+4) and prostate-confined (pT2) cohort, 54%, 22%, and 22% had Decipher scores in the low, intermediate, and high risk brackets for metastases in 5 years, respectively -- not great odds if you chose to leave your cancer untreated. That doesn't take into consideration even worse prognoses if his definitive G score had actually been higher than his biopsy estimated (i.e., upgraded had he had surgery) and/or his cancer turn out not to be confined (pT3 or pT2 with SM+).

No worries about his 'noodle' anymore. Fame and celebrity doesn't always come with good personal judgement.

May he RIP, and may others take a lesson from his choice of treatment.

I remember seeing an interview with Imus. he was treating his cancer holistically and he gave the impression he was "cured" or would be

Imus was a man who’d learned how to be honest with himself. And at peace with himself. The consummate example of a man “comfortable in his own skin”.

When someone dies at an advanced age, and people say "he had a good run" "a full life" etc. I always think that when I reach that age I will want more life.

I don't know how Imus treated his PCa, but if he indeed treated it "holistically" and ingested "habanero peppers and Japanese soy supplements as part of a regimen partly devised by his wife, a natural foods proponent" let that be a cautionary tale for other men.

I used to listen to him as he had great skits and wonderful guests. I remember when he was diagnosed and his discussions of treating through diet and all. He was never specific but referred to it as advanced stage. He was clear that he would not have surgery as he knew others that had and didn’t want their negative treatment side effects. I haven’t listened to, or followed him for several years so a I don’t have any other knowledge about how he reported on his health or life. He always seemed to be an open book. He really did a lot of great charitable work particularly with his kid’s camp in New Mexico. A very unique approach.

Cause of death was listed as complications from lung disease. When he spoke he did sound like a smoker or ex-smoker.

Many years after he sobered up and got clean, he had surgery. The week after his surgery, he was back on the air. For a week on his television show, he had a bottle of Vicodin sitting in front of him. He never took it.

To many, that might look arrogant. But, they’re not hearing what he never said.

He did that to show addicts that they do not need substances to have a good time and to be yourself.

Though, he would never say that.

That’s the kind of gentleman this guy was.

So did he die of lung cancer, or PC mets to the lungs, or COPD? He did make it 10 years, and I guess we don't know what treatment he had other than maybe some holistic stuff. We all know folks who are gone despite treatment, and one I know recently passed despite treatment and I don't think he made anywhere near 10 years. But in both cases I don't know how advanced at diagnosis, and in Imus' case I don't know about treatment. I guess if PC don't get me something else will. Only question is when? Tomorrow or 10 or 20 years? I have already greatly exceeded most of my older relatives in lifespan. In fact, at age 71 in 2 weeks, I'm the only one left alive from my childhood if they were older than me, including some gone who were a little younger than me. So I have really beat the odds in my family history(father gone mid 40s when I was age 3, not sure of cause).

I must say, I would love to still have some things I lost to surgery, but I guess that is the trade off, and I'm stuck with it until whenever I am taken out. I suppose I'd already be gone without some sort of treatment, what with my high risk diagnosis 6 years ago. Actually, I remember a lot of worry after I got my path report, about how long I might be here despite treatment. Some are not as lucky as I have been so far, in that regard.

We all want to know how's it going to end. Human nature. Heard today an old boss of mine caught the last train out - heart attack at 62. He was obese, so maybe a natural candidate for a heart attack. Diet did him in in the end.
