Many of us have hospital appointments coming up because of our cancer and other aliments, Maybe one of our family members are going to have RP or another surgery. The reason I am bringing this up is our Governor yesterday ordered all restaurants closed. I know there are already other states that have done this, What are major hospitals like the Mayo Clinic going to do to handle the thousands of people that eat in their cafeteria's and food courts each day? Are people going to bring food in with them to eat? If your diabetic you have to eat while waiting for your loved one to have surgery. Another interesting question what are the Hope Lodges doing as they do not allow you to eat in the rooms but have you prepare your meals and eat in community lunch rooms where you can visit and get support from one another? It's Ironic that while we are trying to be healthier the amount of junk food that will be eaten from fast food joints will be mind blowing! Let's hope that we can keep the duration of this crisis to a bare minimum!! My heart goes out to the thousands of restaurant workers that are waking up today without a job!! Larry

Sky, food places here shut down too although drive-thru places and deliveries are still in place. Also open are institutional food places, specifically the university which has always been open to the public.

Re closing its cafeteria to the public, the article says:

"... After May 1 the hospital will reevaluate its precautionary measures."

Hospital food service remains open, but is grab and go. No dining areas.

Is a prostatectomy "elective surgery"? All those are being banned in Ohio for awhile. That would upset me more.

Essentia hospital and clinic system have also cancelled elective surgery and appointments. Not sure if RP is elective or not?

To the 'is RALP elective'? question--it's probably a bit of both. I would suspect they would look at it case-by-case. Are you low volume G6? Yeah, you can wait a while. Are you higher volume and higher risk? Maybe not. Same for radiation or chemo--case by case. Heck, a lot of cancer centers have good sized waiting rooms and chemo infusion rooms are not single bed spaces.

I have a daughter who is a hospital nurse in Rochester NY: She says its really weird. It's a 275 bed hospital with about 100 open beds right now. Compared to the usual situation where there are rarely more than a dozen open beds.

At MDA they have closed all the beverage stations and self service food items. I had to track down a Starbucks to get a cup of coffee and wait in line for about 30 minutes and they had no equal or Splenda. As of Sunday, they were still serving hot items and you could still eat in their dining rooms. I’m sure that has changed this week.
We are headed back there today, so I guess we’ll find out. For this trip, we will be staying at the Rotary house.

Ironically, I just returned from Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota, a couple of weeks ago.

Even then, was it my imagination, or did Rochester and the Mayo Medical Campus seem quieter, with fewer patients in the waiting rooms?

After a long day of scans and tests, my "reward" is always dinner afterwards at my favorite Rochester restaurant --- great food, great menu, great atmosphere.

Going to the restaurant has TRULY been a way for me to relax and unwind after "testing day" wraps up --- and a way to pass the evening --- before consulting with the doctor and receiving test results the next day.

Since then, all Minnesota restaurants and bars have closed. Other states in the Midwest have now followed suit.

What seemed surreal and unlikely just a week ago, has now become commonplace and the new normal.

I remember my grandparents talking about packing a family picnic basket, to take along when traveling to an event such as the state fair, many years ago -- especially during the Great Depression era, when going to a restaurant was a luxury.

Thankfully, restaurants here are offering take-out options ... but it might be a while before I get back to my favorite restaurants, it seems.

With "social distancing" in our lives, this website certainly provides a great way to stay connected to our comrades here!
