Why Don't People Wear Masks During This Pandemic?
They don't believe the health experts and have determined from their own investigations that masks don't help curb the spread of the virus - 37.5% - 9 votes

I feel like I am at a tennis match and everyone is playing out of bounds...but the exercise mitigates the distractions from the event

I personally know people that don't wear masks because they think that they are not good, they don't protect and don't protect other people if in case you have the virus. I always get mad at people like this, they don't understand how important is to wear a mask and protect yourself and the people around you.

I think that people dont wear masks for three reasons
1) They dont think the Wuhan flu is particularly dangerous
2) Masks are annoying
3) They forget to put them in their car before leaving the house

I would remind everyone here that we as a bunch are more vulnerable to the Wuhan flu because of age/circumstances.

If I was 35, unemployed, 3 kids and a mortgage, given the statistics, I would not appreciate the economic consequences associated with the Wuhan flu.

I'm in NJ and everyone is wearing at stores (or not going in). I haven't encountered anyone not at least trying to wear one, some slip a bit from the nose!

I've made several comments on a few different threads about how I've appreciated that (pretty much) we've been able to keep our discussions on this topic respectful. To that end, I'd like to respectfully request we call the disease by the scientifically accepted name of COVID-19.

Here in Montana the order to wear them came down yesterday. There is lots of pushback in most every online discussion and comment forum to the tune that "the government is overstepping by telling me what I have to wear."

Well the government tells us we have to wear pants too and I suppose that the naturists have issue with that.

I agree with Michael - lets use science and skip the politics.

FYI, the novel (for "new") corona virus under discussion is called SARS COVID 19 for Sudden Acute Respiratory Syndrome - Corona Virus Disease 2019 (for the the year it was discovered). It is NOT an influenza or a cold or a hoax. It can be properly referred to as COVID - 19 or C - 19 if you are in a hurry. It can be fatal for us here - we are "at risk" because we are cancer patients - and it is very much easier to contract than the flu or a cold. sad

"Wuhan flu" is a political term meant to disparage the science involved and to score political points with a particular US subculture - what is commonly referred to as a 'dog whistle'. I strongly suggest not using such inaccurate terminology on a science - based site.

...and guys, if I want to use the term Wuhan flu I simply will. The reality is, at a minimum, China covered this outbreak up to the world’s detriment. Hundreds of thousands worldwide are dead for their silence/incompetence.

Think about that.

China deserves all of the free advertising that comes with that decision.

"Minneapolis has repealed a measure that barred women from going topless in city parks and beaches after police let slip they were using drones to spy on nude sunbathers – supposedly because of complaints about drinking and drugs.

The Minneapolis Parks and Recreation Department voted to roll back a ban on showing “female breasts” in city parks on Wednesday, condemning the “discriminatory” measure and bringing park rules into line with the laws that govern the rest of Minneapolis. Full nudity is still prohibited in parks, however – suggesting the creepy drone flyovers will continue.

Going topless was already legal outside parks, and the discrepancy in rules has caused significant grief for city women who prefer to sunbathe in the nude. This is especially the case at Twin Lake, a secluded enclave inside the city’s Theodore Wirth Park, which is locally – if not legally – considered a clothing-optional swimming spot."

Guys, I’d prefer, and I’m sure you all would agree, that we keep the rhetoric out if it, rather than being forced to lock a good thread. As you all know, we’ve been lenient about conversations regarding politics, out of respect for the times we are living in. But when the conversation gets testy, we are bumping up against the limit.
Controversy is fine. Purposeful antagonism isn’t cool .

As I read comments from anti-mask folks on various internet sites, it appears many are basing their mask reluctance on posts they've seen which have gone viral pointing out the small size of the virus which could pass through many. if not most, types of masks. In the early days of the pandemic, there was some news about the importance of "viral load" in transmission and I really wish some health experts would be talking about this again in ways that reach the general public.

The 'spittlel' (forgive my spelling if it's wrong) that we all release (in large amounts when sneezing and coughing and in smaller amounts when speaking) is a major way of spreading the virus. Even the flimsiest of masks covering one's nose and mouth is partially effective is keeping most of that 'spittel' from getting past one's mask, effectively lowering the viral load we release. (And of course, the better masks are much better achieving reduction.)

The topless thing depends on community standards but I know of nowhere in the country, outside the rare but designated nudity allowed spaces, where the government doesn't say one has to cover one's genitals in public spaces.

Here in Montana, as I said, there is lots of opposition to the government directing what one has to wear in certain places. However, we have a law that requires hunters, and anyone with them, to wear a certain number of square inches of a particular orange and I've heard no one complaining about their rights being violated over that.

Back to the topless issue, it is usually written as "women must cover their breasts." What if a woman doesn't have any breasts? I am VERY close to a woman who had a bilateral mastectomy due to breast cancer and elected NOT to have reconstruction. I have more "breast" than she does yet she has to cover up when we are swimming at the gym and I don't.

It's weird, illogical, and puritanical.

Here in Topeka we didn't use to have any ordinance about nudity. But then some dude decided to test it, 50ish a bit over weight. City Council quickly adopted an ordinance. It was funny yet disgusting. I think that is the fastest city govt has ever done anything.

Georgia update. I am sure many of you have seen the action of the state regarding A few mayors declaring mask mandates. As I said in my earlier post many attorneys say these mandates are not enforceable as they are not based on actual law and authority.

From the legal standpoint, as I understand, In Georgia, a community leader can do no more, nor less, than what state law, or applicable executive order provides. Governor Kemp has always from the start recommended masks in most public settings, but has not mandated them, nor has there been legislative action. Because of this, a mayor mandating a mask order is likely outside their legal authority. Thus, the state has filed suit against the city of Atlanta seeking removal of the unenforceable mandate.

From the political standpoint, the Atlanta Mayor Bottoms and Governor Kemp have been at odds
since the horrific riots of several weeks ago That caused significant damage to the CNN headquarters, the College Football Hall Fame, and many other businesses. To control the situation the governor called in National Guard when the mayor admitted the police needed assistance. And the continued problems that have caused injury and death and significant property damage. When the mayor failed to protect communities and the rioters threatened damage to state property the governor called up several National Guard personnel to protect the state property. The mayor didn’t like that, however it was clearly stated that she and the city police were overwhelmed and could not provide adequate protection. Additionally, the mayor marched arm in arm many days and nights with peaceful protestors but did not always wear a mask, did not social distance and did not encourage or force others to do so. There are ample pictures and video of these actions. Then last week, she tested positive and immediately made the mandate to force masks in all public places and all indoor places except for residences. So the heretofore good relationship between the mayor and governor has eroded over the last six weeks.

So, leaders are going to court and we will see where it goes. Governor Kemp continues to encourage mask wearing and absolutely supports private entities to require masks. Masks are also required in all state buildings. Communities can and do mandate masks in their buildings. But he has not mandated statewide mask wearing due to the great diversity of the state and the burdens it would place on many people particularly in less populated agricultural areas which make up the majority of the state.

And with that I have an appointment with my GI doc and need to get my mask.

the "not enforceable" thing is obfuscating BS. people need direction to do the right thing.

Colorado has just mandated masks for the entire state after the numbers show that the counties that required masks had significantly fewer cases of coronavirus.

If our basis for naming diseases is measured by unnecessary dead due to silence/incompetence, then let's compromise and just call it the Washington DC flu.

Georgia is particularly hard hit, feeling the effects of its governor's failed experiment. The state reopened too soon, allowed dine-in restaurants, gyms, massage therapists, hair and nail salons, barbershops, tattoo parlors, bowling alleys, theaters etc. to reopen. In addition to that, the state allowed 100s of 1000s of out-of-state visitors to frequent those reopened businesses.

"A total daily average of 546,159 people traveled to Georgia from other states in the week after business reopened—62,440 more trips daily than in the week before the reopening. Just over 90 percent of the visitors came from four bordering states: Alabama, South Carolina, Tennessee and Florida."

Unknown numbers of those visitors became infected, as anyone with a functioning brain knew they would, and that multitude of people then took the virus back home to their own respective states, and to their families, other loved ones, and co-workers. All of the states named above are presently in various stages of grief and suffering, due to their leaders' incompetent policies i.e. reopening too early, not adhering to social distancing, not ordering masks be worn etc.

Buddy, there were several towns including Savannah and Athens (the Governor's hometown) that mandated masks prior to Atlanta. The Governor did not push back against those towns. It wasn't until Atlanta made the same mandate that Governor Kemp started with the push-back. After Atlanta's mandate, Governor Kemp signed a new Executive order re-iterating that no municipality could have rules more stringent that the State guidelines.
Make no mistake: it's a pi**ing contest. Gov. Kemp doesn't want to mandate masks state-wide, and I'm not sure I disagree on that point, as some rural counties have little to no infection. However, when a municipality (mine included) is having outbreaks that are overwhelming local hospitals (both of ours are on complete diversion) and are on crazy upward trajectories, then there is NO EXCUSE for pushing back against local mandates that are beneficial to the communities they serve.
