Low-dose chest radiation may reduce COVID inflammation in lungs

"Low-dose chest radiation, usually given in a single treatment, may reduce inflammation in the lungs of severely ill COVID-19 patients enough to wean them off a ventilator or avoid it altogether."

So claims the article below, and it goes on to say

"The radiation works to offset an immune system overreaction known as a “cytokine storm” ... (in which) the body starts to attack its own cells and tissues rather than just fighting off the virus."

and

"Radiation at these low doses usually doesn't have a direct antiviral effect ... but it does reduce inflammation. And when the inflammation is reduced, the acute ill effects of the byproducts of pneumonia also subside."

and

"The dose for COVID-19 patients ''would be a little higher than the dose of a typical CT scan, but magnitudes lower than when it is used to treat lung cancer."

The article then describes studies being done now to see if there really is something to this. But is also warns " ... there is limited knowledge about the interaction of low dose radiation therapy and viruses," so apparently it's still experimental.

But one more tool in the toolbox if it turns out to be true.

However, the corona virus not only attacks the lung, it also attacks additional organs, e.g. the brain. Autopsy studies have shown that.

It would be ironic if low-dose radiation treatments, usually associated with CANCER treatments, ended up being a viable treatment for corona --- a VIRUS.

Here on the website, the phrases radiation treatments, radiology department, radiation side effects, and radiation oncologist are common --- as viable cancer treatments.

It would certainly be an ironic twist if corona VIRUS patients were suddenly saying, "My RADIOLOGIST was a LIFESAVER!"

An ironic thought to ponder, as we await a turning point, and a viable vaccine ---
