Would you get in line for a new vaccine right now?

I would not. There is so much political/social pressure/profit motive to get something to market that I fear corners would be cut. I would wait (strange analogy, but it's like installing Windows updates!).

In fact, I was surprised to see someone pushing the Russian vaccine. If this was in the USA it would be one of a number of candidates awaiting more extensive (probably phase 3) trials. Again, my fear is that they would shade phase 3 results to get...something... out there.

Comments? Would YOU line up.

Note that I am also factoring in that my wife and I are retired and we do largely self-quarantine and wear masks and practice social distancing. Perhaps in a different set of life circumstances...

Only if experts including former FDA officials confirm the approval process was standard and probably not if it is emergency-use authorization.

Not sure, but probably i'm in line with Duck2 and Djin's comments.It's funny (well, not funny) but Compiler's reason for not taking the vaccine right away is more or less the same reason that i would cite as a reason i WOULD consider it. I am so tired of not living a normal life, that there is a lot i would do to get back to some semblance of normal.
I often think, and this applies to most of us, our years, no, our GOOD years, on this earth are somewhat limtied, not because of PCa, but because of age, and the thought of waiting another 2 years living like this, well, those two years are precious.

With all that said, i'm not trusting anyone right now. The FDA and the CDC have both had statements that they reversed, or moderated, soon after they made those statements. That, combined with a total lack of trust on my part in the current administration, does make me leery.

So i guess my answer would be, i dont know. Maybe not immediately, but within a month or two.

I would get a new vaccine rather than wait. I signed up to volunteer for Phase III trials, but haven't yet been selected.

I got the first available Hepatitis B vaccine, Heptavax, in the the 80s when it first came out, before they produced a safer recombinant hepatitis vaccine. Of course, in military boot camp I got plenty of vaccinations

For me it's a question of preventing coronavirus vs chancing a possibility of side effects.

I got a flu shot (High Dose for those over 65) last week.

You could call me a Vaxxer.

After Phase 3 trials and an FDA approval, I would get it. On an emergency approval basis, I doubt it. Perhaps if the preliminary data was very compelling I would consider it.

Now this assumes that the wait between an early vaccine and one that is more heavily vetted by the FDA is a matter of 3-4 months, not a year.

It would all depend on what the possible side effects are.

In recent years, I have had to take the next version of vaccines I already took since the next generation was so much better. Seems that shingles was like that as I recall and Covid will most definitely be like that.

I'd want to see that it passed an actual Phase III trial, not that it was rushed because we are all anxious for a solution or possibly because of reasons we can't discuss here.

Personally, I will wait well into 2021 to get a vaccine. See which ones have either more data, better results, fewer side effects, etc. I can manage in my work from home, don’t travel, wear masks and goggles everywhere in public, etc. While stressed often, I’m not yet at a tipping point and it’s become quite clear that it is FAR BETTER not to get COVID at all, than even get it and come out the other side. Too many lingering side effects and impairments we are learning about now which could be long leasting.

I think what people often miss from what the FDA typically does is there most likely won’t be a “certification” for any vaccine that has completed the initial rounds of dosing with 10K+ volunteers and completed the initial stages of phase 3 trials. Typically, the dosing period can last 3-6 months, depending on how many shots they require and how long between doses to get the immune response or biologic response they are looking for. The SAFETY review side of the equation can usually last 6-24 months, again depending on population, response expected and possible exposure. So, if the FDA does anything I think they would get an EUA (emergency use authorization) to use a vaccine that has completed at least stage 1 of Phase 3, and then deploy it to a larger population mostly health care workers or possibly really at risk populations. For the FDA to “certify” efficacy and safety, they would have to go around decades of procedures for any prior vaccine to date.

In the purely FICTIONAL story that I will one day write, a story line and plot will be at this phase of the pandemic, the rush to truly circumvent procedure and fast track a vaccine and immunize health care workers, in short order end up taking out most of the health care workers and leaves the society at even greater peril.

AGAIN, this is a PURE FICTIONAL plot line for a story not yet written.
