Our grandson once said "Grandpa will read matchbook covers." I would have to say southern writers are absolutely the best storytellers. Eudora Welty, Mr. Bill Faulkner, Willie Morris, Harper Lee, Robert Warren, John Grisham, Greg Iles, Alice Walker, and on, and on, and on. The greater percentage are from Mississippi. I am a yank, my wife a Mississippian and we presently live in the cold, cold, north.
John Berndt, who I believe is a yank, once said that you can tell the difference between a northern writer and a southern writer. A northern writer will write - the woman crossed the street. A southern writer writes - the woman, wearing the pink cashmere sweater her 2nd husband gave her just before he committed suicide, cautiously crossed the street.
Needless to say I am reading A Time for Mercy, Grisham. If you folks travel a great deal, after this mess we are in now, and you get to Mississippi, be sure and check on bookstores wherever you may be. They take great pride in them. Especially Square Books in Oxford, Turn Row in Greenwood, Turning Pages, Natchez.
