Hi Dave,
I am 62 and had a radical prostatectomy in January '21 (Geason 3+4) followed by EBRT (39 cycles) + 6 months Lupron, beginning in October '21 when my PSA began to rise (to 0.32). By that time, I had already changed my diet drastically to a mediterranean diet, mainly plant based. I also cut out eggs, red/processed meats, all junk food, and drastically reduced dairy and alcohol. I have kept myself active with walking, stationery bike, and weights.
Fortunately my side effects were minimal: hot flashes and some fatigue mainly in the evening, but no weight gain, brain fog, or mood changes. The radiation also made me slightly incontinent; I had reached 100% continence just before starting radiation. Since my target area was the prostate bed and bladder neck, I am now wearing 1 pad a day, but hoping for improvement with time and kegel exercises. I had a recent bone scan that showed normal bone loss for a man my age. Recent bloodwork showed PSA <0.01 and Testosterone at 3. I will have both tested again in July.
Even with the weight training, I have lost a bit of muscle mass, so it's important to make weight training part of your routine, because if not, the lost of muscle mass will be swift on ADT. I also think the dietary changes and exercise helped me maintain my weight. My RO also urged me to stay active since activity can help minimize the side effects.
As far as the side effects, I have tried to make them my friends for now. Since I had activity in the bladder neck, I am using my recent incontinence as a sign that they hit the target and got the cancer that was there.
Wishing you good luck with whatever treatment you decide upon.
Rick
