Well, saw the oral surgeon today. Claims root canal will not work. Due to the large amount of decay, the replacement crown would have to go down too deep. My regular dentist, who sent my wife twice for root canals, also said root canal would not be appropriate for my situation. So, extraction scheduled for mid-October. They did not do an implant sales pitch...YET!

I doubt I'd "bite."

In my previous post in June I said I had a molar that had to come out due to failure of the second crown on it with not enough left to accept a third crown. I had the tooth extracted 6 weeks ago It is the next to last one on the top - right next to the wisdom tooth. There is now a hole but I can't say I miss the tooth enough to want to have an implant. Even if I could get an implant at no cost, I'd not want to put up with the hassle and discomfort of the procedure to replace this one tooth I don't really miss.

I had an implant next to last on the top... not so much because I missed the tooth while chewing, but because I have many years left to live and I didn't want to deal with all the problems from other teeth moving around. Yeah, some are cosmetic issues, no huge deal, but didn't want misalignment of all the other teeth - disrupted chewing surfaces can cause jaw as well as teeth issues.

Get a good surgeon and it wasn't painful nor was it much of a hassle. Two visits to surgeon, one to dentist... and a few (ha) dollars later it's as solid as the original.

Just to say, consider life expectancy and general bone/calcium health.

As Lynnwood pointed out, when a tooth is missing, the adjacent one can move. Over time, this is likely to cause misalignment with the upper one. Whether this will result in serious problems in the remaining years is something to discuss with your dentist.

Mel, as I mentioned in June, have you considered a permanent bridge instead of implant? I have two that have worked out perfectly after extraction.

Until it got shot down, I was considering root canal vs. extraction. I am now leaning towards ONLY getting the extraction and then seeing how it goes. Hopefully it won't be a problem. If it is, I would prefer NOT to do an implant. Too protracted, expensive, and way too hit-or-miss.

Jim I assume a bridge can be done later. Right? I know nothing about this. It still requires an implant. Right?
If I have issues after the extraction, what other choice do I have? Is there such a thing as a false tooth?
