I'm heading to my hometown this weekend for the annual Independence Day traditions ~ parade honoring our hometown veterans, past & present ~ carnival & food vendors ~ street dance & class reunions ~ fireworks show sponsored by the American Legion ~ classic car show ~ the American Legion's food stand with the best beefburgers you've ever had & my hometown church's annual July 4th fried chicken dinner ~ with every kind of homemade pie you can imagine.
The July 4th chicken dinner goes back to the 1880s & my family has helped with the dinner for 5 generations.
I started helping, back when I was 5 years old, collecting quarters at the church lemonade stand. My "cash register" was an old cigar box that Great-Grandpa provided!
Things are looking up! In recent years, I have been "promoted" to lead waiter at the dinner & chief dishwasher afterwards!
Very meaningful to see family, old friends, and classmates every year!
Debt of GRATITUDE to all our nation's veterans ~ past and present!
Happy July 4th weekend!

P.S. ~ There's an elderly fellow who is first in line every year at the chicken dinner - he's getting closer to 100 years old, nowadays. He knew my great-great grandparents well.
He always says, "Best dinner of the year! I'll look forward to seeing you NEXT year!"
Love hearing that, every year! Great Midwestern small town!
