Sometimes the ways people have attempted to deal with the beast can show up in unexpected places. An example follows
Edgar Cayce (1877-1945) being, of course, the noted psychic.
In addition to his supposed psychic abilities, he was also noted for trance readings in which he presumably diagnosed the causes of people's medical symptoms, and prescribed simple remedies for them, despite his lacking of any standard medical credentials.
It turns out that prostate cancer was one of those medical conditions he dealt with once in a reading for a man with PCa who had come to him, even describing specific treatments which he claimed would be effective for treating it.
Of course the "treatments" he describes are unproven and lacking scientific validation, but remain interesting, especially because of their specificity. I describe them in the following "highlights" for the article linked below.
HIGHLIGHTS:
His thoughts on cancer in general:
"Cancer usually results from the failure of natural processes such as coagulation and elimination of wastes."
"Cancer uses the body's life-force energy to survive."
" ... chronic irritation or bruising were often said to be triggering factors producing tumors which could become malignant."
" ... iodex and ash ointment and plantain salve were recommended by Cayce to prevent lumps and tumors from becoming malignant."
"cancer is sometimes a karmic pattern ... in some cases cancer can result from past life experiences."and for prostate cancer (in the 1943 reading referenced above):
" ... the body should consider more of the spiritual than the material things of life."
"Ultraviolet therapy with animated ash was prescribed."
" ... if an operation was inevitable ... it depended upon the attitude of the man and the response that his body made to therapy." So was Cayce on to something? Well, regarding UV light one medical article I found states:
"Though preliminary and requiring cautious interpretation, these data indicate that moderate UVR exposure together with characteristics linked with less effective tanning confer reduced prostate cancer risk."Source:
https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/abs/pii/s0027510704004956But other responsible articles I found say that such an effect was "modest" at best.
And I found no claims online that "iodex" or "ash" ointments or "plantain salve" have ever been found to be useful in cancer treatments.
Needless to say, Cayce and his supposed abilities, including his proposed cancer cures, remain controversial, despite some claims that his "psychic diagnoses" were "remarkably accurate." Or was it just that he was occasionally correct in a few notable cases, which were then expanded upon to enhance his reputation?
I suppose that if it turns out that future research does indeed prove that some form of UV radiation, or ash ointment, or iodex ointment, or plantain salve, are indeed effective in prostate cancer treatment, then we may have to reconsider, and wonder if somehow he did have some kind of diagnostic power or treatment knowledge, beyond usual understanding.
But until that happens, Cayce and his observations must remain more of a curiosity than a cure.
