Lupron side effect Type 2 diabetes reversable?

Ok, new kid on the block. 68yo, 1y post P removal.

Biopsy 5 of 12 positive, most (4+3), one "small component of Gleason Grade 5" found. Post surgery biopsy PT3aNOR1 (margins positive, neg bone scan, neg bladder neck, neg seminal vesicle & vasa deferentia, no tumor present)

38 sessions of post surgery radiation. White and Red blood cells at the lower end of the normal scale.

Developed some heart artery blockage, placed on Pravastatin w aspirin, no surgery recommended.

Urologist recommended, post prostate surgery, 18m Lupron injections, 2x 6m injections received, third coming up in less than a month.

PSA less than .008. x 3.

The unfortunate aspects of all this besides losing sexual drive, some incontinence, is developing diabetes. I do believe it is Lupron related. Lost weight by walking 1 mile 5 days a week, still having difficulty with the diabetes.

The question is after lupron is stopped, and it taking a year to wean from my body, will my body recover from the lupron associated diabetes or is this irreparable?

What are other's experience.

cj, welcome to the forum.
You can't be sure that the diabetes is from the Lupron, although Lupron is known to mess with Lipids, and other blood levels.
I have read that being on a statin (i am on one, also heart blockage, heavy plaque load) makes one more susceptible to diabetes, so it could be the Pravastatin.

Not related to Lupron or ravastatin, I have read alot about people who have reversed Type 2 Diabetes, or at least putting it into remission and getting off meds completely, by drastically reducing intake of (Simple) carbs. And for an even better chance of reversing or controlling Diabetes, completely eliminating all wheat products.

Prato, excellent information in your reply.
Type 2 diabetes is a completely preventable disease which if left untreated, can lead to serious comorbidities.
Our body just does not need another life style induced disease which will negatively affect the treatment of PC and any other life altering conditions we may contract.

From my reading since my A1C has crept up, statins and Lupron are both known to increase blood sugar for many older men and women. However, diet, exercise, and weight control can help in the other direction and reverse effects if not too much damage has been done. The only problem is there is no "cure" but you can control the situation if not too far out of hand.

The control measures can be pretty tough. I lost weight and exercising more since I retired so it was mainly diet where watching carbs and added sugar were the main items. This really simplifies one's diet quite a bit as almost everything with taste has carbs and sugar (and salt and fat) so it takes a somewhat radical change to move the needle. Try unsweetened soy milk for example, really good for you on most accounts and you have to learn to like it. Good luck with your trifecta, older+Lupron+statin.

ps: some blood pressure meds can increase A1C as well.

Yep, Statins and Lupron add risk to developing diabetes, I was just below the concern in my blood sugar levels, now I've graduated to a firm diagnosis.

Yep, 3 weeks into attempting to control my blood sugar, I'm struggling. Have lost 20lbs, 258 from 278 by diet and walking a mile a day 4 to 5x/week.

Started lifting weights, yep, re injured a forgotten lower back injury...sidelined now until it heals. Unfortunately I can barely now walk a 1/4 mile, with dramatically added effort.

For those of you who post your tx hx, it is reassuring to see the diagnostic facts behind your disease, and your progression. Thanks.

That's a great step forward in exercise!

I walk most days, after school. There's occasional days in the Midwest where ice, snow, and wind chills prevent that, however.

Get rested up from your back injury, and I hope you can slowly get back to your admirable walking regimen.

Do you take insulin now?

No matter what ~ your story will encourage all of us to keep exercising. Many of us here are on various forms of ADT & it's important to stay active.

I can tell when I have "skipped" a walk. I have a good flow of energy on the days that I walk.

I also walk on weekends. I find that invigorating, too.

There's a walking trail right next to my place. No excuses for me, right?!
