I have just finished another wonderful book by Siddhartha Mukharajee. Some of you may be familiar with "The Emperor of All Maladies" and "Being Mortal". This one is called "The Song of the Cell", and it is an overview of the science of Cell Biology, and he goes into how the single cell becomes organs, and organs work together to keep a body going.

I found it fascinating--and also more than a little philosophical. Give it a try.

Yes, I taught how cells coming together form tissue, tissue coming together form organs and organs working together form systems. One question to the students was, what is the largest organ in the human body? Answer: Your skin, then liver, brain, lungs.

Now if the smarter ones can stop cell mutation from the start, then the cure for cancer will finally happen.
Thanks a bunch for the reading recommendation. I have not heard of Siddhartha Mukharajee. I look forward to reading his work.

Jack, he goes into that very question. By profession he is an oncologist based at Columbia in NYC. Also a gifted writer. Ultimately he sees the whole body system 'singing' together to maintain the living system.

Always a fan of Ken Burns' cultural and historical documentaries on public television ~ in the medical realm, he created a documentary based on the book "Cancer: The Emperor Of All Maladies" which was riveting, as it traced the evolution of cancer treatments since ancient times.

His documentary on Mayo Clinic fascinated me ... starting when Dr. Mayo rushed out to save victims after a Minnesota tornado in the 1800s, and a nun received a "vision from God" that a hospital for helping people must be built.
