Starting Hyperbaric Therapy for Radiation Cystitis

Four months ago began having blood and blood clots in my urine. I am over five years out from salvage radiation. Did the full work up with CT urogram and cysto. This ruled out cancer, stones or infection. Cysto visualized the radiation damage to the bladder. Mayo and urologist recommended hyperbaric oxygen for my late radiation injury and from what I've read the outcomes are pretty good. Its a big time commitment- every day for 2 hours up to 40 sessions. Insurance has now approved and I start next week. Hoping for good results. Anyone else undergo this therapy five years or more after radiation?

I have not been through that, AZ guy, but will be interested in hearing how that treatment works for you. Please keep us posted as possible.

I'm having dilation on Friday and he'll look at the bladder. My urologist suspects cystitis but was not able to visualize beyond the stricture.
I have clots and blood most voids but lately it's cleared up a lot.
Some urgency and burning as well.
I'm not going to do hyperbaric because of extreme claustrophobia. Wish I could.
There's a chance it's not cystitis so I have some hope and anyway the stricture is bad enough to deal with.

Maybe you could get a scuba rig or other oxygen source and sit at the bottom of a deep pool for the hour or so. smile

Let us know how the upcoming treatments go!

Hopefully, music can be played during the time block.

I went through 45 radiation treatments. I found that I only had to focus on one treatment at a time. Soon enough, the weekend rolled around.

With 9 solid weeks of treatment, I went to 9 different restaurants, when each weekend rolled around. That was my little "reward" for getting through each week.

Maybe you can doze off and take a two-hour nap each day?!

Here's hoping your treatments pay dividends!

Be careful, 100% oxygen becomes toxic rather quickly at as little as 18 ft.

I like the pool but avoid going under for more than a few seconds..
I don't think there is a way to get oxygen into the affected areas other than the chamber.
I can barely get through a CT scan.

Hopefully the treatment will help

So update on my unique experience.

I completed 40 hyperbaric treatments two weeks ago. The hyperbaric doctor recommended 10 more and we are waiting on insurance approval. No episodes of hematuria for 45 days (since about treatment 20) and feeling really good at the results. Only side effect was nearsightedness as distance vision became blurred (as was warned, but previous vision should return).

Met with my urologist yesterday. Did a bladder ultrasound that was clear, did a urinalysis that showed no microscopic blood. Based on this the uro recommended we don't do a cysto now, but wait six months. Feeling good, went out with a friend to celebrate and drank beer.

This morning during a BM- BLOOD! Hematuria back and first episode after 45 days. Have also had clots today. Naturally I'm quite shocked and discouraged and shaking my head at the irony of having just met with uro yesterday.
