Need Prolia Cost/Prerequisites Info

I am currently on HT (Orgovyx) but will be starting an HT vacation. Dr. Lam suggests I consult my local Michigan PCP regarding starting Prolia as my last bone density test 6 months ago was T= -2.4 (Osteopenia but VERY close to Osteoporosis).

My insurance is BCBSM Medicare Advantage PPO. I see my doctor on Wednesday. Any hints on costs? Do I require a dx. of OsteoPOROSIS? If so, maybe get another bone density test? What IS the cost of Prolia?

I was diagnosed in 2013, and ADT injections began immediately upon diagnosis.

In due time, a bone density test indicated osteopenia ~ a precursor to osteoporosis.

Since then, I have received PROLIA injections (every 6 months) to help maintain bone strength and integrity. In my case, the injection is given in my upper arm. It's an "easy-breezy" injection.

It's essential that you inform your dentist, as you begin PROLIA.

In my case, my work insurance (Blue Cross / Blue Shield) covers the cost of the "twice-a-year" PROLIA injections.

I also take calcium supplements, and exercise daily.

Mel, I was put on Prolia as soon as I started on Orgovyx. I had no out of pocket cost with my UnitedHealthcare Medicare advantage plan. However, my bone scan did detect Osteoporosis, so I do not know if insurance covers just Osteopenia. It is known that ADT does affect the chance of developing both. Prolia is used to help calcium absorb into the bones. I was told I needed a high dose supplement of calcium daily for Prolia to be effective. I would think that Insurance would need to cover the shot to keep a person from getting Osteoporosis. Now that I am off Orgovyx, I was told I would get another bone scan in six months to see if I could stop the injections. I might suggest a new bone scan for you to see your current bone health.
