He's out of the hospital according to ABC News:

"Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin was released from the hospital Monday following a stay for treatment of an infection after earlier prostate cancer surgery ... The Secretary continues to recover well and, on the advice of doctors, will recuperate and perform his duties remotely for a period of time before returning full-time to the Pentagon," the Department of Defense said in a statement. "He has full access to required secure communications capabilities."

my question is if it were an appendectomy would he have hidden it? we all know guys who dummy up about prostate cancer because it cuts right to your manhood.

there was this guy i saw for years in the gym. he always wore metal t shirts. i later met his wife at the park while walking my dog and she needed some electrical work done at her house. well that guy turned out to be her husband and he was a realtor! that was 3-4 years ago

i found out he had just been diagnosed with prostate cancer. we talked a little but he let me know he didn't want to talk about it anymore

i found out last week he killed himself with a pistol

one person told me he had marital problems and another told me he had learned that the the cancer was incurable. i could see both being true but most likely the cancer and treatment pushed him over the edge

One of my best friends was diagnosed and had surgery 12-15 years ago. When I was diagnosed I asked him lots of questions and he pretty refused to talk about. I have no idea what his PSA was or his Gleason score or his surgical experience except that he told me I’d hate the catheter.. Then, about 5 years ago he went through radiation and, again, very little information shared. Part of it is that, I think, he really doesn’t want to know as he won’t go the the portal to check his PSA after an annual test but prefers to wait a few days so the doctor can be there in case it’s bad news. The time between testing and the doctor visit is very anxiety-producing for him. Like others have said, everyone approaches their personal health issues ina different way.

This has been a very interesting thread. I'm personally hesitant to criticize him for wanting to not talk/keep this away from the public. However it certainly would be useful if high profile folks would help publicize our cancer and the potential cures. When Katie Couric's husband died of colon cancer her advocacy for testing undoubtedly saved many lives. Sigh...

On the other hand I don't think there is any excuse for him keeping his hospitalization secret from the President. This is a key, high profile position. In what world would any of us thought it reasonable to keep info about an absence from the job away from our boss? Gotta question his judgement on this...

i'd say there is at least a 50/50 chance his hospitalization was no secret. it's possible "they" thought he'd be in and out but when that didn't happen......

I was reading an article this morning about further evidence of the Secretary's great effort to hide his health condition.

The article also stated that ”Eight in ten men and six in ten black men are diagnosed with prostate cancer every year." Lol! At that rate just about every man in the U.S. has PCa, so what is the Secretary worried about? 😀

You wouldn't have to know much about anything to realize those numbers are ridiculous.
Very sloppy writing. No one reads these articles prior to publishing?

It's getting curiouser and curiouser.

CNN article below says the Secretary and his aides were " ... trying to remain a little subtle," asking the ambulance to have siren and lights off as it approached the Secretary's home.

He was " ... experiencing complications from a December 22 procedure to treat prostate cancer."

But he was not " ... experiencing chest pain or feeling like he was going to pass out. He was awake and oriented."

The rest of the article goes on to describe his medical situation in some detail, as well as mentioning a "review" that will take place of how all this went down.

we never knew of the diagnosis or the surgery so he was definitely being "subtle". if you recall john kerry was diagnosed with prostate cancer when he was running for president, and we didn't hear about it until after the election

I don't know how many of the rest of you either saw Austin's presser, or read about it. He admitted he screwed up--and said one of the classic lines about how blindsided he was about the diagnosis, and he just lost it.

I get it. I remember it.

And yet, I still wonder what the heck happened. It sure sounds like he went from diagnosis to surgery within days. And then he had complications that threw him into critical care. Which is crazy rare. So, what is really happening--I don't know if we'll ever know.

He was very forthcoming in his presser. Better late than never, so I'll give him that. And he pointed out that not only is it important to do screening, but that it was even more so for black men.

The guy screwed up. He should've told the President. Everyone makes mistakes. End of story

Not sure who saw the "transfer" of the soldiers that died last week, but Austin was using a cane to walk during the ceremony.
