After reading months of different threads no one has mentioned the one positive aspect of PC surgery.....................NO MORE DREs

daveed...yes, the newer opinion is that a DRE isn't necessary unless there is a change in your PSA (beyond the first year).

Now that you mention it; you are absolutely correct. Lucky me this will be the fifth year since I had a colonoscopy.

I didn't mind the DRE, since it took only a few seconds once a year.  What cheers me is that I don't have to worry about the biggest urinary tract problem for aging men--enlarged prostate!  I can now sit back, relax and chuckle at all the ads between innings of televised baseball for Flomax, etc. \0/\0/\0/

You know, that is what I thought..no more DRE, but my urologist (actually the PA) said they will continue this.  Because my PCA was detected at first by DRE.  He said that this type of PCa (low PSA (1.4) but nodule felt) if spreads can grow as a nodule of lump in the area where the prostate was removed.  So they will continue to check to make sure nothing is felt.  Anyone else heard of this?  I do not know how often they recommend yet.  I actually had forgotten this conversation until now reading Daveed's comments so I will have to double check.  How long before you guys saw your Urologist once the catheter was removed and how long before your first post PSA?  I am to have my PSA drawn this week (5 weeks post) and then again in another 5 weeks right before seeing my doc.  So it will be over 8 weeks post foley before visiting with doc.  Just curious of others experiences.

Hi Michael,

I think it pretty much depends on the doctor, but my urologist scheduled my PSA tests for 3 month intervals for the 1st year post-op. then once every 6 months there after. Maybe there is some protocol written down, but I have not seen it yet. The resasoning I was given for 3 months was in case there was a low residual PSA reading in 5-8 weeks it would cause needless worry.
