I am getting my beloved catheter out tomorrow and while I will miss sleeping all night without having to get up, I am very much looking forward to getting back to a semi normal life, at least in appearances.

After my surgery how long do I wait until I get my first followup PSA test and then how often should I get them after that?  I am hoping to go on a trip to MX in March for the month and wonder if it will be okay to wait until the first week of April to have it tested or should I wait on the trip or just have it tested in MX?

I would appreciate any information on this.

Hi Mat ~   Your urologist will tell you tomorrow….  They all have their own schedule... Yippee !!!   Good bye Mr. Foley aka Hang… Sounds like you let him do his job.   Good for you!!!       Our urologist wanted …a 3 month and a 10 month PSA….   He then said see you in 6 months and we said we would really like to see him in 1 year! He said not a problem but I want to see blood work done in 6 months.   He stays on top of his patients for the rest of their lives because he says too many get complacent and won’t do follow up.   Follow up is “very” important.   Go on your trip and have a wonderful time.    What part of Mexico are you going?????   In Friendship ~ Lee & Buddy   P.S.   I remember the night you first signed on to the forum…   Thank you for allowing us to walk with you!!!!   Hope to hear from you as time permits…

Thanks for the info,  I will follow up with the doc tomorrow, but I wanted an idea of what others had experienced.

We have a condo at the marina in Puerta Vallarta and we really enjoy the people as well as the weather.  I am taking a course in Spanish so that I can hopefully keep the dreaded "sometimers" disease at bay in old age.  They say to keep the mind working on new things is the best way to do that so I am trying.

Hi Mat,

My first PSA test was about 3 weeks post-op. The next one is set for 3 months later and I get them every 3 months for the first year, every 6 months for the next 2 years then once a year from then on.

That is all based on "undetectable" results all the way...

My surgeon wants a post-op PSA one month after surgery.  I had the blood drawn today.  However, the local urologist handlling my post-op care said PSA in you rsystem has a half-life of 18 days, so I shouldn't be surprsied if it is elevated above the zero mark to 1 or 2 or so.  She figures my surgeon just wants to see if it has gone down at this point.  So it sounds like 36 days would be a good time to get started.  Good luck.

Motelmat - you may sleep all night again . . . . .Bob too loved the catheter for that reason. Of course with incontinence and all with the sphincter training required post surgery he spent a couple of weeks getting up during the night, etc.

However, now he NEVER gets up from the time he turns in until he gets up in the morning . . whatever the time. He hadn't done that for years before PC.

The first time I realized he hadn't been up I was feeling the mattress you can be sure and all was just fine.

Your surgeon will tell you about PSA testing and I'm sure he'll let you plan it around your trip.

Have a great time and so glad you are feeling so well.
