prostate cancer treatment by IMRT completed

 Had 8 weeks treatment 42 sessions. Initial success with psa drop from 37.3 to 17.0 down to 4.7 at 7mos.Next psa due in jan 08. Sexual function returned to near normal in 6 weeks. Now at 11 mos and experiencing ED.Achieving erection using Viagara but recent failure to ejaculate and also losing erection before finishing. I am concerned about this development and hope is not a situation that will continue or worsen.I would like to hear from anyone out there who used IMRT and what their experience has been.I am 74,but definately do not want to lose my ability to enjoy sex which has always been a major part of my life. Appreciate any input and praying my situation is a temporary thing or something that can be corrected.

Dear texstar,

I finished 43 treatments of Image Guided IMRT seven months ago. To date I have had no ED issues, but my oncologist told me that I had a 50% chance of being impotent within 18 months. I have no experience with Viagra, or any similar drug. Wish I could offer more encouragement, or advice. Good luck.

I think you go through the ED treatment ,somegeneric pills like , Generic Cialis is a very popular ED treatment, used to assist men achieve an erection. You mention about the impotent, Erectile dysfunction (ED) is the inability of a man to achieve or maintain an erection sufficient for his sexual needs or the needs of his partner. Erectile dysfunction is sometimes called as “impotence”.Use of theses generic pills you can reduce your problem.

I have been told the same thing by my radiation oncologist about IMRT and not sure how or if impotence can be stopped. Let's hope you and I are in the other 50%. But if for some reason I am not I still have much to live for with a great family with 3 grandchildren who light up my life.

Hello Michael and best to you. I had 88 gy of radiation and have experienced little side effects. A bit of ED, well, maybe, but I wasn't the greatest before. Like you, my personal life is just the best, so I almost (almost) don't care. I'm considering a blue pill, but I was thinking of that before. Sex is great, but love is better.

Bill you have a great attitude and hopefully the ED will improve. But if not I plan on still being a great lover, just different methods. But since my IMRT was so close to my surgery and I hadnt regained an erection I think my chances are only 20%. Dang!!! But I like a good challenge.Keep us posted and enjoy your life to the fullest. Sorry to hear you're having these troubles. Being that I'm getting IMRT right now, it's something I need to be aware of. I did find two interesting videos on Dr. Snuffy Myer's site about ED and radiation. He said that radiation can cause scarring of the penis, limiting the erection. Also, it can harden the artery that feeds the penis, reducing blood flow and generation of nitric oxide which fuels the erection. Here are two videos:

For others who are still in radiation therapy or contemplating it, Dr. Mulhall at Sloan Kettering said that low-dose Cialis, etc., actually protects the penis during radiation, diminishing the effects. See www.mskcc.org/mskcc/html/94910.cfm

I have been told both by medical professionals and other PC victims that there is no generic Cialis or Viagra, hence the high cost. As someone who is preparing to undergo IMRT, I would love to have that issue clarified.
