My son was tested using the DNA mouth swab. We knew about gluten sensitivity so his Lyme doctor wanted him tested further.

He had 1 celiac gene and 1 gluten sensitivity gene.
The question is how many celiac genes do you need to have for gluten to potentially cause GI and other organ damage?

He does not have any symptoms after eating wheat. Hes only seven. Is it more from long term exposure?

And do the people who react severely carry more genes?

I have 1 Celiac gene and 1 Gluten Sensitivity gene. Gluten affects me severely. All it takes is one gene...the more genes, the more likely one is to react. I don't think more genes = more damage, it just increases the likelihood of Gluten Sensitivity or Celiac.

You can only inherit 2 of each type of gene, right???
I've always been curious why some people react more severely than others, even if they only carry one celiac gene, and why some people start having physical symptoms at earlier ages than others.

The human body is soooo mysterious. It makes no sense sometimes.

i didn't know there were different genes! one for gluten-sensitivity and one for celiac!

me, and my 2 daughters are dq2 heterozygous (high risk of celiac)
husband is dq8 heterozygous (moderate risk of celiac)
son is dq2-, dq8- (extremely low risk of celiac)

so which one is for which? thanks!

Yes, everyone gets 2 copies of each gene - 1 from each parent.

DQ2 and DQ8 are both Celiac genes.

DQ1 and DQ3 are Gluten Sensitivity genes. But it is more complicated than that, because of how genes are labeled.

Hi LupnerRN, I was just wondering why they tested your son in the first place if he doesn't have any symptoms? Did I miss something in your post? We can be wheat intolerant and not gluten and the other way around, there's also dairy and/or soy and several severe stomach issues that can cause the intolerance or mimic the symptoms. I hope he is doing better now, my son had the "finicky" stomach. He couldn't tolerate ANY formula and he's the only kid I know of who actually IS allergic to broccoli and brussel sprouts and every vegetable except tomatoes, beans and carrots. He's grown out of the projectile vomiting stage, he's 17 but he still can't eat any of those things and he can only have dairy in moderation. Please let us know what you find out :)

Have both HLA-DQ8 and HLA-DQ2, celiac disease can effect almost any organ, however after long term untreated celiac disease, I developed neurological complications specifically spinocerebeller disease, the nonfatal form;I also developed arthritis. Spinocerebeller disease can mimic many neurological diseases. Also the genetic tests are only for exclusion purposes. If you do not have the genes you have a extremely low probability of having either celiac disease or gluten sensitivity.
