It all started on Feb 28, 2011 when I was only 17 years old. It started out like any other day. I woke up, ate breakfast, went to school, ate lunch, came home from school, and had an afternoon snack. Me and my dad decided to go out to eat for supper. As soon as I walked into the restaurant, I about
threw up. The smell of all the food was so sickening! I literally ran into the bathroom and spplashed cold water on my face. My dad actually made me sit there and wait while he ate his food! He didn't care if I was sick or not. When we got home I was so nauseous that I went in the bathroom and layed on the floor by the toilet. I almost threw up a couple of times.
For the next 3 days I was so sick that I couldn't eat or drink anything. I was even throwing up water! My dad finally took me to the family doctor to see what was wrong. The doctor said, "Looks like you have acid reflux." He gave me some medication for it and ssent me home. His indifference really surprised me.
(I lost 8 pounds during the first 4 days!)
The next day I was still sick so my mom drove me to the E.R. They hooked up to an IV, since I was severely dehydrated. They did an ECG, an x-ray, and a urine test. The ECG and urine test came back with normal results, but the x-ray showed that I was severely constipated. They also told me I had acid reflux and said to take laxatives for the constipation. I went home, took laxatives and cleaned myself out. However, I was still really nauseous so I couldn't eat much.
Two days later I was still nauseous and not eating very much. I was able to drink a little water and juice. My mom took me to a different E.R. They gave me some Zofran for my nausea, which helped a little. While there they hooked me up to an IV because I was dehydrated again. They also performed an x-ray and it showed that I was still constipated. They sent me home with a little Zofran thinking that I would feel fine as soon I cleaned myself out. However, I still didn't feel well after cleaning myself out with a ton of laxatives.
My mom got me some Benefiber and MiraLax to help with my constipation. I started taking those 3 times daily and drinking as much water as I could. They didn't work at all. My mom took me back to the family doctor and told her what was going on and that we wanted answers. The doctor said to try senna and gave me a new medication for acid reflux to try.
Throughout the next couple of months I was still sick with really bad nausea and and severe constipation. I tried every acid reflux medicine out there and none worked, so my doctor finally told me to go to a GI Specialist. We made an appointment with the GI doctor who immediately wanted to do an Upper Scope and Stomach Biopsy. A week later I had the US and SB done and everything came back normal. They said I definitely didn't have acid reflux!
I went back to my family doctor who said, "I don't know what's wrong. Sorry, but I can't help you anymore."
In May 2012, my mom took me to see an alternative medicine doctor to see if she could help. This doctor immediately ordered and extensive blood test. This tested for food allergies, plant allergies, and even for Celiac Disease. A few weeks later the results came in. It said that I had several food allergies and that i'm positive for Celiac. I almost instantly went on a gluten-free diet, because I just wanted to feel better. I also cut out all the foods that i'm allergic too.
Throughout this whole affair I lost 20 pounds! (Use to wiegh 118 pounds, but now weigh 98 pounds)
I actually had to go to the E.R. 2 more times from being so sick at times.
On October 25, 2012, I had to go to the E.R. for the 5th time, because I was having severe abdominal pain. They did a CT Scan and said my appendix needed to be removed. They said there was a possibility that it was smoldering all this time and it was what was making me so sick. They removed it 2 hours later. Sadly, it wasn't my appendix that was making me sick.
After being gluten-free for a year, I still have trouble with severe nausea and constipation. I recently started getting weekly headaches/migraines too.
Here's a few other symptoms that I experience/have experienced:
Dizziness (usually with headaches)
Canker Sores (got them as a kid and continue to get them very once in a while)
Bloody noses (got them as a kid alot, dont't get them as often now)
Occasional Joint Pain
Fatigue
Trouble Sleeping
Slight Anemia/Hypoglycemia
Medications I take now:
Pearl Probiotics
Magnesium(400 mg?)
Liquid Vitamins (the pills make me sick)
Zofran/Phenergan/Tigan (for nausea)
Advill/Excedrin (for headaches)
Dulcolax (every 3 days for constipation)
Medications/Remedies that I tried:
All acid reflux medications!
Reglan
Prozac (I have no clue as to why one of the doctors I saw put me on this one)
Compazine
Benefiber/Metamucil
MiraLax
Tests that I've been through: (Everything came back normal!)
X-rays
CT Scans of my abdomen
Barium X-rays
Upper Scope/Stomach Biopsy
Thyroid testing
Gastric Emptying Study
Colonoscopy (had this one done April 5, 2013)
The GI doctor that did the colonoscopy said to try taking Metamucil and MiraLax two times daily. He said that if they didn't work to come back and do a Capsule Endoscopy to see if theres anything wrong with my small intestine.
I'm really tired of being so sick all the time. I can't go out with friends and it's affecting my college grades. I need to do something about this!
Any Suggestions/Advice is truly welcome! I'll try anything after being sick for 2 years and counting!
