Going to an allergist soon, how I do approach this?

I made an appointment with an allergist on the 26th to test for food allergies among allergens from the environment. Since being diagnosed with chrons/colitis back in september, I as of now have completely cut out all gluten, grains, dairy, sugar (except for honey), and starch from my diet. I'm also on prednisone and tapering slowly.

As I visit the allergist in a week, I want to test for gluten intolerance or celiac (as it runs in my extended family), but my doctor said while on prednisone, I won't get accurate results. Is there anything you all recommend to test for? I think its very possible I could be gluten intolerant but both my naturopathic doctor and my GI doctor don't see this being likely.

An allergist cannot help you. They test for wheat allergy only not celiac disease or gluten intollerance. Sadly, allergy injections do not work on celiac disease either because it is an autoimmune disease not an allergy.

You need to visit your primary care physician and get a referral to go see a specialist. There is a fancy blood test (mine took 8 weeks to get back) that will give the probability of celiac disease. There are endoscopy tests which can check for celiac disease and finally if you have a nasty persistant weepy rash that may also be celiac disease. I unfortunately have both versions of celiac disease.

If celiac disease runs in your family then your doctors are wrong, you need to be tested. I was the first member of my family to receive the diagnosis. I had no family history whatsoever. Since then my sister, two nieces, nephew and great nephew have all been diagnosed with celiac disease or gluten intollerance. Any family member related by blood to someone with celiac disease needs to be tested.

Just a quick interjection, if you are going to be tested for gluten-intolerence you need to go back on gluten for at least a month in order for the test results to be somewhat accurate. Good Luck keep in touch.

Or check out enterolab.com and get the gene test for Celiac/gluten sensitivity, too. Don't have to be eating gluten for their tests. But the Prednisone will influence results of the stool test (but not the gene test) while you are taking it and possibly for as long as 6-12 months after.

But really, if you feel better off gluten, then why bother with tests and just stay gluten-free?
