So, I am new here and I figure I might as well share a little about how I came into the GF world. Currently I am 22 and at the age of 19 I was officially sick of being sick. I had literally tried everything else, dairy free, food diary, I even had a colonoscopy done to still receive absolutely no answers. You know how embarrassing it is at 19 to have a colonoscopy? I was sick of being poked and prodded and still not getting any answers and had sworn off doctors completely since for 19 years they had not helped me with my digestive issues. That happened in the spring of 2010 and that August just before going back to college I went camping with my parents and I was the sickest I had ever been. I would lay on the air mattress shaking and crying and I ended up spending a lot of time in the pit toilets instead of with my family. On the second day my parents told me about a news story they had seen, I think on the Today show, about gluten intolerance and celiac disease. This was something I had never heard about and definitely was not anything my dozens of doctors over the years had ever suggested, but at that point I was willing to try anything so I stopped eating anything that contained wheat, oats, barley, malt, or rye that day and after 2 weeks I noticed that the pain wasn't so intense any more, and so I kept going, it wasn't until about 3 months later that the pain finally stopped and I didn't have to keep a mental inventory about where all the restrooms were located in case of an emergency but it was heaven. That news story gave my parents a chance and it gave me the freedom to have the confidence to go out and work at a summer camp where there aren't always bathrooms readily available. Since that day I continue to be gluten free and although I didn't get the official test or anything and will never know exactly where on the gluten intolerance vs. celiac continuum I am that is fine with me because I will never go back to that pain simply to find out what I already know and that is that being GF is what makes me able to live my life and have the confidence to know that as a teacher I won't have to run out in the middle of a class to use the bathroom or anything like that.
