obviously new to this forum, but not to thyroid problems

Glad to see this forum started up! I have hashimoto's disease/hypothyroidism. I was diagnosed almost 10 years ago. All I'm on is synthroid...a generic version and sometimes question it's effectiveness. I was just looking for people who also had hashimoto's to see what they're doing for treatment, etc.

When my dr finally placed me on medication 3 years ago (I was diagnosed with a "goiter" when I was 5), he prescribed "real" synthyroid 50 mcg. Last year my TSH went up and I started on 75 mcg "Levothyroxin", a generic brand and at my 6 month recheck, my TSH was again elevated. Now I will take Synthyroid only. I know it is four times more than brand name, but I hope I can continue to pay the $15 or so every month.

I would like info on thyroid symptoms. I do not know what they might be for me. I have always been "anxious", "flighty", had bouts of constipation and diarrhea. I have always been able to remember every stupid figure or fact, but can not tell you right now where my purse is. I have heard from my sister that memory problems are symptoms. Can anyone tell me what thyroid symptoms are?

If you look at 5 different sites with lists of symptoms, some will be the same and others will be different...and of course, none of us will be exactly the profile. I had stomach/ IBS type symptoms while hypo, but that usually goes with people who are hyper.

I was put on 75 mcg of Levoxyl, also a brand name, for Hashi's. My labs were normal though, but doc wanted to reduce inflammation of my thyroid. Turns out I had a cancerous tumor too, so the whole thyroid had to come out and we never really had much time to treat the Hashi's even though I was symptom free.

I have had hypothyroidism for 15+ years now. I was up to 224mcg per day with no changes in my symptoms. I was finally refered to a Rheumy who then dx'd me with sjogrens, lupus and Hashimotos. She referred me to an endo to treat my Hashis and I was suprised with the information given to me. first of all, I was on over double the amount of thyroid medication than I should have been. For my height and weight, the maximum dose is 100mcg. Next, they said that generics are a no go for me. There is a variance between generic and the real deal...enough to make a difference. The final thing I found out was that because I was on so much thyroid medication...it was shutting down my pituitary function. I hope this information helps.
