Hi ya'll. Welcome to the new thyroid forum.  I was wondering if anyone saw a connection between their autoimmune disease and their thyroid disorder?

I'm certain that my thyroid condition is related to my auto immune disease. I just don't have a clue as to what to do to help control what's going on with it!
Do you see a connection to your auto immune issues? That's if you have thyroid issues. What do you do for you thyroid issues?

My thyroid disorder was an autoimmune disorder, Hashimoto's. Turned out I had thyroid cancer too, I hit the motherload.

 

Cousins have Hashi's too, no other real family hx of autoimmune disorders....

I just posted about it...I also have hashimoto's. I've heard that if you have one autoimmune disorder you're more likely to have others.

I've had Graves disease, ulcerative colitis and autoimmune arthritis.

I tend to think I have autoimmune disease which just picks different body systems to attack rather than several separate conditions.

Actually, I have been questioning this. I have Hashimoto's, my daughter has Hashimoto's and my sister has Hashimoto's -- and we have all had breast cancer!!!! My sister has Shogrens, my daughter has asthma and allergies, and I have allergies. Also, my aunt died of breast cancer and she had eczema and psoriasis. Seems to me somehow there has to be a link here.

Hi Juju....recognize me from the BC board?

My first cousin and her daughter have Hashi's too. Doc thinks my mother had it but was never tested for it. I'd love to know if my Hashi's was related to my thyroid cancer and of course if there is a BC connection. My onc thinks there is a small connection for thyroid cancer and BC, but said the research is just beginning. They do say that having Hashi's puts you in a group to be at risk for other autoimmune disorders. Yea us!

I have Crohns Disease and also become Hyperthyroid. They thought at first I had Graves Disease, but I had just the one attack, took PTU for 18 mos and haven't had any problems since. I do think if you have one autoimmune disease you can easily get another. JMHO

My wife also has Hashimotos. When she worked at the hospital they had a surge in thyroid diseases and started to make everyone wear the neck protector for xrays and the number of new cases dropped dramatically. She was diagnosed long before working there though. Thyroid disease runs in her father's side of the family. She has several aunts and cousins that have it, but her sister doesn't and so far our daughter doesn't. My wife was diagnosed at 13 and my daughter is 14 now.

Most imbalance in the body will knock off the thyroid. My lupus and lyme had my TSH going from 3.6 to 1.6 back to 3.7.

Enviromental factors and diet also affect the thyroid

I am certain my autoimmune issues which are caused by chronic lyme and co-infections caused my Hashimoto's.

Hi.  I'm new to the forum, but really appreciate all of the information.  I also have a family history of Hashimotos, but am convinced there is more to this whole thing.  My question is have you or anyone you know had cortisol tests (diurnal) done and if so what were the results?

Hey, I just got the book "Thyroids for Dummies" and it mentioned that if your tyroid goes out of wack it can affect you immunity. idea

When I first went to an endocrinologist for my Grave's disease, he told me it is a autoimmune condition. He was a super-specialist who specialized in thyroid problems.

This was a few years before the onset of UC symptoms.

Hi I was wondering the same thing. I seamed to have fallen apart when I turned 50. I was diagnosed with Lupus, discoid, then complex seizures...now I have graves disease. I have not been working for 2 months right now and I'm kinda feeling like YUCK! They just put me on a beta blocker because my blood presure was 187 over 92... and I have never had high blood presure. Wow, Think I'm gona go back to bed and pull the covers over my head!!! shocked

In my thyroid book I read that your blood pressure can be affected by your thyroid.

Joy, I am also of the understanding that the cholesterol is something to stay on top of in people with hypothyroidism too (becomes elevated). It is so hard for me to wrap my mind around how this thyroid effects almost every organ in our bodies especially temperature control & the heart( I used to freeze to death I'd cover with 3 blankets and still be cold & to this very day should I become to heated my face may stay red for hours and my body doesn't dispell the heat as it should).

Hi I am new here. I was diagnosed with thyroid disease almost 19 years ago. I am 40 now and my level right now is 70! I have Lupus, RSD, Irritable Bowel Syndrome, Acid Reflux, RA. I was diagnosed with Lupus almost 3 years ago, RSD 6 years ago, and the other syndromes have come up in the last few months. I really can't say that I got Lupus because I have thyroid disease, my docs say I got Lupus because of the shock and trauma from my car accident 6 years ago.

I just know that having all of these diseases makes me feel like crap and right now I feel even worse with my levels being so high. Plus my thyroid symptoms are opposite of what they should be for this type of thyroid disease. I lose weight instead of gaining it, I can't get weight on and keep it on.

I just want to get feeling better, as good as I can feel with all of these diseases going on. I start taking a higher dosage of thyroid meds tomorrow so hopefully it won't take too long to kick in.

Kygal, My cholesterol is out of control. This also is from my thyroid troubles. My doctor put me on 80mg of zocor trying to bring it down. I'm afraid for my liver. 40mg nearly messed up my mom's liver.
Watch out for sleep apnea. It is also a side effect of thyroid troubles. If you snore, fall asleep when you sit down, or don't sleep solid get checked out. Those were my symtoms.

I'm 26, my thyroid packed up after having my first baby when I was 23,  I noticed something was wrong when I began to get a goiter then when to the doc to be told that I had hypothryoidism which was apparently pregnancy induced.  I have been on thyroxine tablets since and will be for the rest of my life.  Since then I have had another baby just over a year ago and now have been diagnosed with Crohn's disease this week.  I am intrested to find if anyone else have the same 2 auto immune disease, and whether there is a link between the two.

Sheesh you have had a time of it 54321. I also have crohns and thyriod problems. I think there is a link between the two but I have no scientific proof other then the phenomea of autoimmune cascade.
