Inhomogeneous Right Thyroid Mass. Help??

Ultrasound of thyroid. Report says:

The right lobe is enlarged measuring 4.0 x 2.9 x 2.1 cm. A single large mass almost completely occupies the right lobe. The mass measures 3.3 x 2.2 x 2.1 cm.

This mass in inhomogeneous with blood flow and biopsy is recommnded to rule out neoplasm.

The isthmus is normal in size measuring 1.4mm in the AP dimension.

The left lobe measures 4.1 x 1.6 x 1.6 cm. The echotexture is generally homogeneous. In the midpole, a single mass with calcification is seen measuring 2.0 x 1.4 x 1.3 cm. No other discrete masses are identified.

IMPRESSION: Bilateral large masses, particularly on the right. The right-side solid mass is suspicious for neoplastic disease and biposy is recommended.

I have an appointment with an endocrinologist August 20th.

This is really bad isn't it?????

Help, opinions, experience    anyone.

I'm scared to death, I do know what neoplasm and neoplastic means....cancer. The rest of the report I don't really understand.

Recovering from 1st stage Lyme and now this.

I would appreciate anything anyone can tell me.

Basically this means that you have some abnormal growths on your thyriod they want to rule out cancer.
No one wants to have cancer, but if I had to have cancer and got to choose... this one is not that bad, it is very treatable, and by this time next year you will more then likely be back to normal. You might have to take a pill and get regular check ups, but life will basically be back to normal.

I agree with MMMNAVY. Neoplasm means an abnormal growth of cells, not necessarily cancer. I had a follicular neoplasm on the left side of my thyroid that was benign (not cancer) and a follicular neplasm on my right side that was cancer. Try not to worry. Thyroid cancer is very treatable. I had surgery back in April to remove my thyroid and I have been doing well ever since. Good luck with your endocrinologist appointment tomorrow. Also, I am recovering from Lyme disease as well.

Goldfinch thanks, encouraged by your reply.

I was a smoker and because of that I had a CT scan of my lungs every two years and six years ago it said I had an enlarged right thyroid. My GP said it was a common thing, not that large and my thyroid tests were good so don't worry about it...should have known better.

As you can see by the above report the right lobe mass is very large and suspicious.

As for smoking I joined a no smoking class with a friend and tomorrow is the last class. I am not smoking, but still on the patch and Nicorette gum. Quitting is not easy, but can be done and both of us are thinking about joining the next class just for reinforcement.

I will post results of my biopsy when I get them.

One more question...how long did you have to stay in the hospital when you had your thyroid removed and what medication are you on?

Saw my new endo this morning and what a nice visit. She took time to go over my metabolic blood test and explain everything to me. Said it was normal and told me to increase my Vitamin D-3
from 1000 IU to 2000 IU per day.

Also ordered an ultrasound guided needle biopsy of both my right and left Thyroid lobes and not to worry she does not think it's malignant.

Will schedule test today.

Hi Jane,

I just now saw your question.  Sorry in the delay in getting  back to you.  To answer your questions-For my first thyroid surgery (removed half of thyroid) I chose to do it as an outpatient procedure and I went home the same day.  I had my surgery in the morning and I was home by supper.  For my second surgery (removed the other half due thyroid cancer) I chose to do the surgery as an in patient.  I stayed in one night and was discharged the next morning.  I am currently on Armour Thyroid (120)mg and a Calcium/Vit. D supplement. 

Did you have your biopsy yet?  If so, I hope it when well.

Thanks for sharing I really appreciate it. I want to know all I can and feel I get best information here than anywhere else. Nothing beats personal experiences.

Had my biopsy 8/26 and will have results Monday 8/31 and will let you know...Much more about it and mammogram results and biopsy done the same day.

If you will go the Breast Cancer Forum and read

"Oh Boy What Next" there is lots more posted about what's going on with me including my thyroid. Trying to stay positive.
How are you doing on the medication...any side effects...side effects scare me.

Hi Jane,

Stay positive and take it one day at a time! Hang in there! Please keep me posted on your results. I will follow up on the breast cancer forum tomorrow since it is so late. I just got in from an evening out. How is your Lyme disease? Was your Lyme treatment successful?

Michelle, as for lyme, still on doxyclycline, still tired don't feel like doing much, still have tremors mostly in the morning.

I never had pain or any other symptoms like so many have to endure.

My LD was caught early and I know how lucky I am and it only was because I was hospitalized with a fever of 104 and sent home 5 days later only to return 12 days later. I asked to be tested for Lyme, they did and it came back positive...a miracle considering how inaccurate blood tests can be. Went home a few days later on Doxy. This was in May 08

I'm not over Lyme still don't feel like my old self, but getting better.

Yes, your right....I can and will beat this disease, but there may be more to come.

Waiting for 2 biopsy results on Monday, both were done last Wednesday.
Possible thyroid and breast cancer and according to the onco she thinks I have breast cancer. The endo does not think I have thyroid cancer....we shall see.

Been talking with Lori (tavish) on HW and she has been a great help and inspiration. She has both breast and thyroid cancer and is doing very well.

Hi Jane...I lurk here too. :)
I prefer to say that I HAD breast cancer and HAD thyroid cancer....all in the past. Breast cancer was dx'ed in 1999 and cancer free since then. Thyroid cancer was dx'ed last May, surgery and RAI, clean scan in May and now considered "clean.
See? One day this too can all be in the past for you. :)

Oh my gosh what a dumb mistake..........Lori HAD breast and thyroid cancer and is cancer free because she has such a positive attitude.

(I'm a big believer in that)

Big difference between has and had and I knew it was had. duh. :-)
