turn  Does anyone know about hyperparathyroidism and how it can be CURED?  Please let me know...thanks...Lily12

Doctor's method is usually these:

Surgery
Calcimimetics
Hormone replacement therapy
Bisphosphonates

At home remedies

■Monitor how much calcium and vitamin D you get in your diet. Limit your intake of calcium to about 1,000 to 1,200 milligrams a day and your intake of vitamin D to about 400 to 600 international units a day. Talk to your doctor about dietary guidelines that are appropriate for you.
■Drink plenty of water. Drink six to eight glasses of water daily to lessen the risk of kidney stones.
■Exercise regularly. Regular exercise, including strength training, helps maintain strong bones. Talk to your doctor about what type of exercise program is best for you.
■Don't smoke. Smoking may increase bone loss as well as increase your risk of a number of serious health problems. Talk to your doctor about the best ways to quit.
■Avoid calcium-raising drugs. Certain medications, including some diuretics and lithium, can raise calcium levels. If you take such drugs, ask your doctor whether another medication may be appropriate for you.

yeah  Couchtater...Thank you so much..I am seeing the endocrinologist on Thursday...I know surgery is an option, but he said it should be treatable.  I heard that when it is removed, (the bad one) you feel wonderful almost immediately.  I would like a CURE..as I do not like to go back and forth. 

 

My Mother has had problems with this (hyperparathyroidism) for YEARS.  and I feel it has increased many of her problems.  HYPERTENSION, to be exact.  It is skyhigh.and they cannot regulate it.  I went to DR. Norman website, in Tampa, FL...and HE seems to be an expert.  He says, It IS curable....but by surgery.  I know there are two types, right?  Anyhow, I will give you an update after Thursday, but you sound like you definitely know what is going on here....Thanks so much for your help....I have taken diuretics, for YEARS and YEARS..and yes, I bet there is a correlation.....

My brother suffers from parathyroidism. His developed from end stage renal failure.

I hope you get a solution for your problem.

Thank you Couchtater...I pray your brother gets a cure.  There are so many strange things that happen with the body, and the thyroid is a real mystery.  I think that diuretics have a lot to do with it too.  Also, once I see the dr. I hope he can tell me something.  Thanks for your caring heart....talk to you after tomorrow..

His only cure is a kidney. He's type O+ so it's hard to find one right now. No one in the family can help due to health problems by all.

turn  Hey, I will put him on our prayer list for a kidney.  I know that God cares, and have seen many miracles.  I went to the dr today and he gave me another blood test and calcium test too.  Says maybe surgery.  It is so frustrating, and I just want to feel normal.  I know it is not good for me to have this hyperparathyroid problem.  I could use a little prayer too.  It is the 24 hrs urine test.  We shall see.  Please keep me posted about your brother.  I TRULY pray for his kidney...God bless you

Good luck in getting the surgery. I hope it solves your problem.
I'm hypothyroid and despite medicine I still suffer the aggervating symptoms at times.
Not having a healthy body is very frustrating.

  1. I will definitely keep Perry in my prayers.  I have the last test and then will know for sure if I have to have the surgery or not, once he sees it all.  I think that is what is going to have to happen though, because I don't feel good.  Hypothyroidism is really FRUSTRATING to say the least.  Gaining weight is terrible.  Hope you get your TSH checked often.  It can be irratic like mine has been.  I have gained about 10 lbs, but of course sitting at the computer does not help at all.  chuckle...so now ot make a program of diet and exercise.  I am seriously thinking of WWatchers.  They are wonderful and help to motivate me.  God bless you again...and I will pray for you too.  God bless you too...have a super weekend.  yeah

MEN1 (multiple endocrine neoplasia type 1) runs in my family, my fathers side, I was diagnosed after a DNA test for it in 2007. Thus far the only issue I've had has been hyperparathyroidism, high calcium levels which one of the results was multiple kidney stones.
I had one enlarged parathyroid taken out July 2010, still had high calcium levels, so was referred to Dr. Yeh at UCLA in Aug 2011 for a parathyroidectomy and left forearm auto transplantation. Basically, they take out all remaining parathyroids (in my case three) pick out the best one, cut it in half, and one half is cut into four pieces, attached to a small piece of titanium and implanted into my forearm.
Was taking calcium carbonate (Tums) until the parathyroid implant took hold and started working again, about three weeks.
The reason for the auto transplant in the forearm, if it were to enlarge again, it's easier, and safer, to have surgery on the arm than the neck.
Thus far, it's been great! No new stones, calcium levels are normal.
My symptoms are different from my father, though his issues started about the same age as mine were found. So it's nice that I was able to get a head start and hopefully get a handle on any issues that might arise and could be prevented.
