Hi I'm sue, I have been to the endocrine dept and had thyroid tests. My TSH was 3 and FT4 was 18. I have lost quite a bit of weight in the last few months and have a few other thyroid symptoms, are these results normal?

Can you please post the reference ranges?
A TSH of 3 is considered by many to be near the upper limit of the reference range, I feel well with a TSH of between 2-3, so for me it might be normal but for many others they report that they feel well when their TSH is near 1.

However, weight loss is typically a symptom of hypER, which is when your TSH is low, but if your FT4 is high that can be the reason for having a hypER symptoms.

Each time you go for blood tests ask for TSH,FT3 and FT4, also to see if the cause for the thyroiditis is an autoimmune disease ask to be tested for thyroid antibodies, there are three, TPOab and TGab are associated with Hashimoto's disease(hypo) and TSIab associated with Graves disease (hyper).

If you have Hashi, then you need to know that you face a long journey untill you reach the proper dose of levothyroxine for you, to give you an example, I was diagnosed five years ago and still adjusting my dose, for others it takes much less.

I have no experience with hyper.

Thanks. The range for TSH was 1 to 4.5, for FT4 12-22.

Can you have normal labs with Hashi's thyroiditis? I was sent by my endocrine to have an ultrasound of my thyroid to see if there were nodules causing my goiter, but the test came back negative for nodules of any kind. The Physicians Assistant didn't explain what was causing the swelling though. I was told ''everything was fine'' and 'don't worry'. Without knowing further what is causing the enlagement and swelling I can't not worry. These people drive me nuts! Sorry for the ranting, I want to know what's going on.

Hi,
Do you have the report of the US of your thyroid gland?
It could be that you have enlarged gland and still not having any nodules.

I have just been diagnosed with an iron overload disorder. My haematologist had my organs tested including my thyroid. My FT4 has dropped from 18 to 13, is it normal for it to drop? Thanks.

hypoHashimoto- I was diagnosed w/ Hashi last Aug. Put on 25mcg of levothyroxine. Felt much better once I taking it. Also started going GF at the same time. Bloodwork was checked 6 weeks later and again for the last time in December, and came within limits the doctor liked (don't know the actual results), so she has kept me on 25 mcg. My questions...should she be checking me more often? Should I expect my dose to eventually have to go up?? Has anyone ever gotten themselves off of the drug? She told me I can't take Armour b/c I have Hashi. Is she right? Thanks for any insight.

6 weeks is the minimum, for me 6 weeks is not enough time to see the TSH going down and then up I need three months, but it is enough to see that it is lower due to the meds.

25 mcg / day is a very small dose, most people end up on a very higher dose, for example I take 900mcg/week.

If you have Hashimoto then you are expected to take the meds for the rest of your life.

Hashimoto patients can still take Armour, but there is no reason to switch to Armour if you are doing well with levothyroxine.

TSH was 2.98 so yes same.

Thanks for your response. I don't like taking natural drugs, so really did want to take the Armour. But, my doc told me I can't because of Hashi. The last few weeks I've been feeling a little "off", like I did before I was diagnosed... less energy, a bit dizzy/spacy from time to time, a low blood sugar-type "feeling" that comes out of the blue, a subtle pressure feeling in my throat. Perhaps time for another blood test to see if my levels are still OK? Last one was first week of Dec.
