New here, just found out I have a goiter

Well, I'm not really new...I used to be on the UC boards a long time ago. I had some surgeries and am currently off all UC meds.

Now I'm having new problems for the past year or so. I have been so exhausted all the time and have pms and constipation really bad. Struggle to lose one pound a month even on a strict diet...

Family doc started me on Syntroid low dose. Finally started getting my energy back and feeling better, but gained 10 pounds, six months in ended up having 2 menstrual cycles plus additional spotting in one month when I had never had irregular cycles, ever.

So I went back to my doc and had my thyroid levels tested. Of course they were perfect finally. But I was freaking out about the irregular cycles. Doc refused to change the synthroid. So I quit taking it.

Went to gyno to find out about irregular cycle. They found nothing wrong. Thyroid levels were still normal. Felt like total crap though. Gyno did not feel comfortable messing with my thyroid meds. Told me to go to a specialist.

Two months later (last week) I got in w the endocrinologist. He said I have a goiter! I had no idea. And tested my thyroid levels and tested me for Hashimoto's. Will get results next week. They will call with results and prescription, then I go back in 2 months.

He said I may or may not need an ultrasound on the goiter. Honestly I would rather just get the ultrasound, wondering if I should call the office and ask for one.

Ok so I guess my questions are: if you have had a goiter, did you ever NOT get the ultrasound? Is it a good idea to get one??

Anyone switch from Synthroid to something else with good results?

Do you think I caused the goiter by stopping the Synthroid? :(

Anyone get very irregular cycles once starting thyroid meds? What did you do? Thanks.

Oh and glad to see some familiar faces here, even though you are having problems and that sucks!

Hi, Princess, I remember you from UC. Glad to hear your surgery has served you so well.

Now the bad news: welcome back to the world of autoimmune disease. Both Hashimoto's thyroiditis (hypothyroid) and Grave's disease (hyperthyroid) are autoimmune disoders, and we do see any number of UC-er's here from time to time.

A goiter can show up with hypo-, hyper- or euthyroid (normal levels) status. When I was diagnosed with Graves, my endo also pointed out that I had a goiter. Goiters develop slowly, so that often we don't really notice them unless they get huge. I had no ultrasound because my labs were so wacko it was obvious what was wrong.

I've been on levothyroxine from the beginning, with good results. Some of our members feel they do better on Armour dessicated thyroid. As for me, I figure the mouse proteins from my Remi might not like the pig proteins from the Armour, and I'd get some new exotic disease. Barnyarditis or something.

My cycles were irregular for some time before my diagnosis, but that was likely due to a combination of being hyperthyroid and having huge fibroid tumors. In fact, my Graves was picked up during the exam before my hysterectomy was scheduled. As far as I know, there is not relationship between thyroid and fibroids, but I'm not sure.

If you can give us your lab results (with reference numbers), we can possibly help a bit more. In thyroid care, lab numbers count a lot for management because the symptoms are so non-specific a diagnosis really can't be made from them.

I have had my throid cysts for 7 yrs. and hypothyroidism for over 15 yrs. I take armour thyroid. My cysts seemed to get bigger as the yrs went by. They were so lg this dec that my dr wanted to aspirate them. But since I could barely tolerate having them biopsied, I said no.

I posted early how i found{ by accident }that cold pressed castor oil rubbed on topically reduced my thyroid cysts/goiter. It was amazing!! I can breathe much better now! Plus it was painless!! Read up on topical cold pressed castor oil. It is suppose to help the immune system function better and we do have an autoimmune disorder.

Oh my, the barnyarditis thing made me crack up. It's one of those things that sometimes you have to laugh at... I got a call today that my levels are currently within range. But the doc is going to start me on levothyroxine 25mg I believe, they said I could half it if I want, need to pick it up tomorrow and figure out what I'm going to do. I forgot to ask about the antibodies results, will call back tomorrow. Just got hit with the stomach flu, so was out of it when they called earlier. The fun is just never ending over here, ha ha.

Thanks so much, I will look into that. I have a sensation of a lump of phlegm sometimes, once I found out I found out I have a goiter I figured that's why I have that sensation. It can be so annoying.
