Hypothyroid and throat/neck pain???

I recently had my thyroid checked and it was at 8.58. I have been complaining to doctor for almost two years that I have had this fullness feeling in my neck. Well since the first time I noticed it almost two years ago it has gradually gotten worse. It is like there is a fullness in my neck following my up into my ears. Now there has been pain and also pain in my ears. I have went in for ear infections but good there. I recently had ultrasound for goiters but good there. Is this common and will it go away if my levels get better? I am just sick of the pain and can't really take it anymore. Also my ears sometime swell. It wierd

I don't have an answer for you but I UNDERSTAND what you are going through. I pray you get some answers soon and please let me know when you DO get some answers. It is very frustrating. Listen to your body and use your gut if you feel that something is not right. You must be your own advocate. I pray you find some relief.

My background: I have so many symptoms of hypothyroidism. I've mentioned the symptoms to every doctor that I have seen in the past 6 years....they politely smile and do nothing. I had cervical spine surgery in April this year and two weeks after had a choking sensation that lasted hours. ER visit did show a nodule on right lobe. Two months later had an US which was suspicious....leading to a FNA. The pathologist asked what medicine I was taking for my thyroid condition - LOL!!!. Preliminary findings were thyroiditis and inconclusive but abnormal nodule specimen...repeat in 3 months. He told me that even though my baseline thyroid blood work was normal there were other tests that should be performed. He also said that I'm not the only one he has met with ear pain. I have had ear pain since 5/28/14....primary and ENT visits (yes multiple visits in 3 weeks) said I was fine but finally put me on antibiotic. The day after I finished it my ear pain returned. The endocrinologist left me a voice mail that I was fine and to repeat FNA. She didn't have the pathology report yet so I don't know how she was able to determine I am fine when I was told on the spot my thyroid was severely inflamed. So once again I'll have to go to another specialist or two.

I am so sorry to hear of your struggles. I thank you or the response though. I am just so tired of all of these doctor visits as I am sure you are. It makes me wonder if before they come in the room they look to see the patient and sigh thinking, "Oh, her again". LOL!! Please let me know as well when you get answers. I am very curious as the results and praying you get some. It is nice though to talk with someone who understands

I have Graves rather than Hashi's, but I do know it can take some time to diagnose Hashi's. First they have to differentiate it from other types of thyroiditis, which may go away in weeks or months. Then determining the appropriate treatment can also take time. Most people do well with levothyroxine supplements, but some need dessicated porcine thyroid (such as Armour) and others may need also to have their T3 supplemented.

Just to make things more complicated, many of the symptoms of thyroid disfunction are relatively vague and can occur with many different conditions. That's why doctors tend to rely on the lab tests for guidance.

Hope you both get some answers and relief soon. Let us know what you find out.

can relate to the ear and throat pain/discomfort.

First I had headaches start (March 3/14), daily headaches, I still have them. Then in April the throat/ear pains started. had my ears checked out numerous times, they've look at my throat. No redness or sign of irritation. One doctor found that the right side of the thyroid was enlarged. Had an ultrasound; normal. Had a CT scan of my head only (for the headaches); normal. (why the doctor wouldn't have ct of my neck while they had me there I don't know). This week had blood work done. TSH was 2.85 (don't know the range of hand, maybe 5.5 was top limit). Found to be anemic- one tick under the lower limit, funny that I am anemic when I eat proteins and veggies every day. No processed foods, very little to no grains, starches or sugars. MVC was high at 98.4 and MCH was high at 34.2.

I so totally feel like my doctor opens the door and rolls his eyes that Im back.

I went to a naturalpath, she found that my Adrenal glands, thyroid and gallbladder were all energetically out of balance. Of course she has solutions in the form of remedies. I am going to see another naturalpath that does salivia testing (perhaps throwing good money after bad, but at this point what ever I have to do to find the solution)

Have an appointment with a ENT in August, can hardly wait. I can only imagine what the referral letter was like.

I seriously don't know how much more of this I can take. Had my appendix out in late May /14. Even the morphine didn't take away the headaches.

I would be glad for any insight any anyone can offer.

I can relate. My rheumatologist first said connective tissue early 2013 then said maybe fibromyalgia because of the neck pain. Prescribed Lyrica and since they have increased dosage multiple times. I was referred to neurologist who did more tests than I thought existed and said my head is fine. No scans of my neck though. I see a primary doctor close to where I live and I swear I get further with her than I do with the specialists. I am deficient in Vitamin B and D. I was increased to B shots every three weeks and now am taking 8000 mg of D a day and now have to take a big dose once a week. it's been well over a year of the vitamins and the levels still do not increase. So then thyroid was high, 8.38, and they did an ultrasound. That was fine. I am so tired of hearing the word fine when I DON'T feel fine. LOL. I have started to take hydocodone for the pain and my primary was not happy because she does not like pain meds. I told her neither did I but I am to the point that I am drained physically and mentally.

I had multiple trips to a podiatrist and two surgeries later was told one was pointless. The arthritis in my feet is bad and hurts awful. But they told me there's nothing more they can do. Just deal with it. Then I went through multiple tests for IBS and ER visits due to the pain. They found a blockage in one scan but colonoscopy fine. I have seen more doctors and all just look at me like I am crazy. One had me bend over and touch my toes and because I did that he said "you don't have rueumatoid arthritis" and that was end of visit. There's so many more visits but that would take forever and this is already long enough.

My last visit to my primary was for recheck and she had a student with that day. They got to the door and they stood out there whispering for a full fifteen minutes. When she came in she said she was trying to update her as to my condition. I can only imagine what was said. I didn't have the energy to really care either.

New update- I saw an ENT last month and after an hour of telling me in a round about way that I was crazy he did a throat scope. Apparently the back/base of my tongue is hugely swollen. He was pretty concerned and performed a laryngoscopy a couple of weeks ago. They took samples and biopsy came back ok. So NOW he says he's not sure why my throat is swollen. He says it's completely abnormal but "hey, have a good day". What the **** do I do now?????? I am so lost.
Stacey, how did your ENT appt go? Just thought I'd check back in and update. Thanks to all for your help and support. It means alot to me.

I was given levothyroxine for the thyroid level and the level did go back to normal range with the medication. I was told I will have to take it indefinitely

Can you please post the actual thyroid tests with reference ranges ? which brand name of levo do you use? what dose ? for how long ?

These are the results from 2008 and levels. I am unsure what brand the levo is but I take 1 tab 50mcg daily. Started taking right affter the 6/25/14 TSH test and still currently taking

And how do you feel now? do you feel any improvement ?

Your TSH looks good.

I am asking about the brand name because feeling good with levo is very individual, and one might need to try different brand names before he finds the appropriate one !

I don't feel any differently. I am still very tired and weakish. Could hypothyroidism cause the throat selling?

I meant thyroid Ultra Sound.

I am sorry, I can't help you further, if the ultrasound came back normal and your TSH levels are brought to normal, I have no idea as to why you still don't feel well, maybe you need to try another brand name of levo, like Synthroid, it is number one medication in USA with number of prescriptions in 2013 ~ 24 000 000.

I hope others here can help further.

I am so sorry to hear all what you are going through, it does seem that most doctors are not Marcus Welby and then I see a tv show like Quincy and think , funny how they will not stop until they found what killed someone but wont take the time to find what's wrong with someone , but god forbid if you don't buy the right brand of motor oil for your car !
