(No Subject)

Hi. New here...writing for my 29 yr old with Graves/radiated thyroid when she was 16. She takes rx for it, but for several years had been depressed,has hair loss,no energy,sleeps all the time,cant lose weight and basically feels horrible. Currently taking Lithium and Zoloft for the depression Dr. Thinks she's Bipolar...I feel its her thyroid. She is also on oral contraceptives. Recently had blood work, looking at hormones cuz of messed up periods too...said thyroid rx didn't need to be changed. I am soooo worried about her...any thoughts ???

Hi. I'll have to get those results from her as I don't live with her. Sure though as I'd love to be able to help her. I'm positive she doesn't have Bipolar...but depression among other things due to not having her thyroid regulated...but her Dr. doesn't know her as I do or see her very often and she isn't able to advocate for herself very well, so thinks she's depressed(badly) because she has Bipolar Disorder. I plan on seeing her tomorrow, so I'll try to get her latest reports. The SO much for your response.

I've read that many times, also that if she is truly Bipolar, the Lithium should have helped as she's been taking it for over a year(low dose) and is still depressed !! I really wish she'd go to a Endocrinologist instead of her MD but she says she can't afford to go to a specialist.

Her family doctor can treat thyroid, he needs to run TSH,FT3,FT4,TPOab ,TGab and TSI .

Her TSH will show her thyroid status, and the last three are thyroid antibodies that can cause autoimmune inflammation .

If she is going to pay for the tests from her pocket , then she can drop the FT3/4 , and only order TSH, which is the most important .

Also it is typical for psychiatric symptoms not to respond to psychiatric medications if the cause for them is the thyroid.
