Hi. I've been hypo for years. I was on Nature-throid but my naturopath took me off because I started having very rapid pluse and felt like my heart was racing and I was so anxious (more than usual). I'm severely underweight and have been suffering from GERD for months, ever since weaning (painfully) off a horrible acid blocking drug (a PPI).

My TSH is 2.69
T4 Free 1.0
T3 Free 2.5
T3 Reverse 17

Do those numbers mean I should go back on Nature Throid? Could those numbers be causing my acid reflux?

Hi LiveJoy,

Your TSH of 2.69 is optimal !

How much time after stopping the NAture-throid did you perform those blood tests?
If less than six weeks then those results are not informative, you need to wait at least six weeks.
Do you know whether you have Hashimoto's disease? if the answer is positive then you should be put on some form of thyroid hormone replacement for life, if not Nature-throid then something else!
Have you ever tried Levothyroxine ? if you live in the USA then there are several brand names available such as Levoxyl, Tirosint and Synthroid, it is always better to be on brand name and not generic!

Thank you Hypo. I was only off the Naturethroid about 4 weeks max when I took the test. Maybe I should retake them? I've never been diagnosed with Hashimotos.

You need to wait at least six weeks since stopping the NT/

To test for hashi you need to ask your PCP for a referral to the thyroid anti bodies blood tests which are TGab and antiTPOab, if either is positive then you have it and it is the cause for your hypo.

The antibodies test I had was thyroglobulin antibodies and thyroid peroxidase. Is that the same? Both were normal (but I took them 4 weeks after taking NT)

Yes they are the same, if you have them then you will have them for life, neither NT nor Levothyroxine get rid of the antibodies, but just treats the hypo that comes as a result of the Hashimoto's .

Do you know what was your TSH prior to starting NT ? for how long did you took it ?

The symptoms that you mentioned above are indicative of being hypERthyroid, it can cause under weight, rapid heart beat, anxiety and much more.

It is very possible that you do not need any thyroid hormone replacement and either that you do/did not have hypo, or that it was a transient hypo.

You can repeat the TSH, FREE T3 and FREE T4 in six to eight weeks since stopping the NT and to go from there!

The specialist who treats hypo/hyper is called Endocrinologist, you can ask your PCP to consult with one !

p.s. Do you know what are the reference ranges for the FREE T3/4 tests that you posted above ?

Thanks I will retest. The ranges for T3 are 2.3-4.2 and T4 0.8-1.8 so I'm at the low end. I was on NT for a long time - many years (starting with ARmour) -- so don't recall my previous TSH. Hoping it was transient. I desperately need to gain lots of weight and calm down, though I think my weight loss is related to the acid reflux I developed from getting off a PPI (horrific acid rebound for months) and subsequent inability to eat much.

TPO is thyroperoxidase, Tg is thyroglobulin , they are two different antibodies for thyroid.

They are NOT for life. The old school of thought is that they were for life. Thats what we were told time and time again, but its known to be false now..

There are thyroid "geek" Drs, some popular online, who are slowly proving the old theory wrong.

There are other forums where contributing individuals have mentioned that Hashimoto antibodies are not forever.

I have proven this too, fully documented it.

Any and all autoimmune antibodies can elevated from : molecular mimicry - food sensitivities with leaky gut, environmental toxins, general body inflammation, low immune function, chronic infection, even certain identified genes that can make someone predisposed to this.

After 18 years of both elevated antibodies, one of them has now normalized for two years. I controlled or cured lyme disease and went 100% gluten free even though I'm not celiac.. My continuous need to increase meds has also normalized to the same does per repeated lab testing. My 10 year old thyroid nodule also completely dissolved per my last ultra.sound.

Crossing my finger that this continues to improve.

astroman, do u still eat the gluten free bread and grains? Do you think going gluten free decreased your antibodies?
