I am 20 years old and have the hardest getting myself to go to sleep at night. I also am always anxious and have high anxiety. My last doctor put me on ADHD meds cuz they thought the hyperness was from that. However, I took them and they just made me more stressed so I stopped. I also get dizzy easily. How does dizzness work with thyroid disorders? My sister and mom both have had hypothyroidism so I always wonder if I should get checked or not? How do they do the testing is it just a blood test? And can you just go to a normal doctor or do you need to see some sort of specialist? Thanks!

Hi- I have Hypothyroidism. Its done with a simple blood test.
Your reg-doctor can check by doing a complete blood count also known as CBC.
Start by checking first. I hope all is well

k333, your primary care doctor should be able to do a simple blood test to check for thyroid function. Normally they do a T3, T4 and TSH. If your T3 and T4 are low and your TSH (thyroid stimulating hormone) is high, you are hypothyroid. If the T3/T4 are high and the TSH is low, you are hyperthyroid.

Your symptoms sound more like hyperthyroidism than hypo, actually. I'd like to recommend you work with one doctor on this, instead of going to a different one each time. That way the doc gets to know you, knows what helped and what didn't, and you don't have to start over at the beginning each time you go.

Good advice so far...I'd like to ad that since you have a family history, and it runs in families, be sure to get regular evaluations. Even if the blood work is normal, be sure to get re-checked every so often. I am 41 and had been told that I had a large thyroid back when I was 18 and ever since. All my doctors told me but my blood panel was always perfectly normal. Then I found out 2 cousins have Hashimoto's and turns out I had it too.
And while some symptoms are typical for hyper or hypo, I learned that you are still an individual and you may not fit the common lists...so listen to your body and instinct.
And if the thyroid checks out ok, you might want to consider talking to a therapist for ways to help deal with the anxiety before trying other meds. I get anxious too sometimes at night and rely on some self talk to relax.

Dizziness can be caused by a lot of different things, but thyroid problems are one of the possible causes. In my case, I was told that being hypo was causing my sodium level to be too low. As a result, I couldn't absorb water at a normal rate & my blood pressure became quite low (70/40 or 60/30). Low blood pressure caused the dizzy feelings. My Primary Care Physician put me on a special diet with higher sodium until the Synthroid had a chance to start working. Now I am returning to a more normal diet.

If your thyroid test comes back normal, you might try seeing either an ENT (ear, nose & throat specialist) or a neurologist to look into what may be causing the dizziness.

My legs swell something terrible with my hypo. I can gain five pounds in one day with the swelling and fluid retention.

      Good morning. My name is Dani. It is very nice to meet you. I am sorry you have to worry about thyroid problems. I too get "dizzyness"..sort of, more like fainting and fainting with jerking (convulsions). I have hypoparathyroidism.

 

      I think a good place to start would be to go to your general doctor and tell him/her your worries, but be sure to mention the family history. He/she may do blood tests then send you to an endocrinologist. Reguardless of the outcome, I want to send you a very warm welcome. I hope the doctors are able to pin point the cause of your symptoms as quickly as possible.
