thyroid removal

I am new to this forum.  I have had 2 different nodule biopsies in the past 2 yrs.  The last was last week.  The results were that they found atypical cells in the biopsy.  The endrocrinologist suggested having him do another biopsy or surgical removal of the thyroid.  After going thru this inconclusive biopsy I have opted to see a surgeon for complete removal.  My appointment is next Monday.  Reality is setting in.  I am scared to have the surgery, worried about having to take a pill for the rest of my life, yet tired of dealing with these biopsies.  Any advice on questions to ask the surgeon and/or expectations after surgery?

I had mine removed in 1975 and things were a lot different then. But, my son had his removed 2 yrs. ago. The surgery was only 1 hour, he was in the hospital 2 days and out of work for 14 days. His was done in a military hospital as he is active duty military. He was back on full duty in 2 weeks. The pills you have to take are nothing compared with all the tests you will have to undergo if you don't have it removed and be done with it. We were only left with a small scar and no complications. Both of our's were removed due to tumors on the thyroid and clean bills of health now. Good luck and I know it's hard not to be afraid, but the sooner you have it done the faster it will be over.

I had my thyroid removed on July 3. This is day 4 post op and I am feeling a lot better every day. The worst part of the surgery was the horrible sore throat after the removal of the breathing tube. Hot drinks were more soothing than cold. My concern now is that the Dr. Didn't put me on synthroid but on a generic. When I see him on Tuesday do you advise me to have him switch me yo synthroid? Any advice?
