Sonogram showed 5 thyroid nodules, one is 3 cm. my primary doc referred me to endocrinologist and I see him in a few days. I am terrified, can't eat, can't sleep. So scared. I am in pretty good health otherwise for being 65 .

They are only doing the sensible thing by checking you out thoroughly. (this is a good thing!)
I know all this testing, being sent to endochrinologists is scary but the odds are in your favour that it's probably all ok, and if not, worst case scenario, as the article said, "most thyroid cancers are non life threatening".
One step at a time though.
