Doctor tells me to stop thyroid medication

I have been on thyroid medication 25 mcg almost four years. My lab results have been normal the entire time. He has recommended I stop the medication and be tested in a month. My question to the forum is I thought taking thyroid medication was permanent. Is it possible that the thyroid issue can be temporary?

Any answers are appreciated.

Can you post your actual thyroid related blood tests along with reference ranges ?
Do you know what was the cause for you to be hypothyroid ?
Have you been tested for Hashimoto's disease ?

I have been taking the same dose and have not waited the four hours before taking dairy or calcium. The doctor thinks menopause might have triggered the hypothyroid. There is a hereditary component with my grandfather rumored to have problems with the thyroid.

Your results are normal, and they are so because you take the Levo, so I don't understand why your doctor wants you to stop the Levo .

Hypo,

I have always felt better at a low dosage. I was even taking the levo every other day. I actually know of several people who were able to stop the medicine but still go for regular check ups. I go back in a couple of weeks to get blood testing for the thyroid. I will let you know how it goes.

Thyroid issues can be temporary. In the past problems with the thyroid were addressed by putting iodine in the salt. Maybe you are getting enough iodine now and no longer need the medication. Listen to the doctor. If the test say you don't need it then you don't need it.

Thanks for the input. The doctor says if I have any symptoms to go back on before the blood work. Crossing my fingers that this was a menopause hurdle.

I am not sure if I was tested for Hashimoto's disease. I will check with the doctor when I go for my check up.

Ask him whether he tested you for AGab and antiTPOab !

Also if you have hashimoto then it is not recommended to consume iodine or sea vegs !

Hello Everyone,

Just an update. I was given the AGab and AntiTPOab blood tests. Came back strongly positive for Hashimoto's and I am back permanently on my medicine. Doctor thought it might have been environmental but it turns out it was hereditary.

Glad I checked with the forum.

I think your levels are low. I've researched and read enough that says mid to top of range you are not there.

I was 3.13 on 07/11/2015. Went off medication for just one month and lab results came back 8.8. Very strong positive for Hashimoto. I've since gone back on the medication and my hair has started falling out.

Michelle - This is unelated to the subject topic, but I haven't seen you on the GERD forum in a while, so hoping you'll see this here. How is your wrap doing? Did it ever heal after that vommitting episode you had?

I had a pretty bad dry heaving spell back in July. Called Gillian's office, had a barium swallow. No sign of reflux, no herniation. Still can't eat solid food without pain and have had symptoms of reflux for the first time in 4 years. He thinks the wrap somehow got tighter and that everything will be fine. This doesn't make sense to me. Go for an EGD tomorrow to double check status of the wrap. Back on PPIs for now.

Hi KitKat,

Just getting your message. I had another bad vomiting spell back in 2015 after an EGD. My Barrett's never healed even with the wrap, so I went through a mucosal resection (cut out the Barrett's) in 2015. June 2018 no Barrett's and wrap is still intact. Gastro claims I had 10 EE's show up on my lab results meaning wrap could be leaking. Doubt that seriously since I can't eat big meals and everything gets stuck. I still take PPIs even after the wrap. But I did gain 14 pounds so when there is a will there is a way.

You should be fine. I did notice any discomfort or indigestion, I may have is directly due to eating and bloat. I did meet one of Gillian's patients through my husband's work. He had a vomiting episode too and didn't eat for a while. Went through testing, wrap intact and stable, and went on PPIs as a precaution.

So I take one day at a time. I don't sneeze, cough or have asthma on a regular basis anymore. I did have that bad cold in January 2018 with the persistent coughing. Did call Gillian about that and they gave me medicine to prevent coughing. Didn't work but wrap stayed intact.

Hang in there. Don't get any dilation. I would recommend the wrap staying tight. It's inconvenient but it'll last longer. Keep in touch. Michelle

Hi Michelle,

That's great news about the Barrett's being gone, though a mucosal resection sounds painful. I'm glad your wrap seems to be holding strong and that your coughing and asthma have cleared up. Coughing is frustrating; whenever I get sick I still tend to grab a pillow and hold it across my midsection to avoid strain on the diaphragm. Too bad the only cough syrup that seems to work is an opiate so doctors no longer want to prescribe it.

My EGD last Friday showed my wrap is loose. The picture basically just shows a hole at the junction of my esophagus and stomach. Despite all of my symptoms, I was a little surprised by this as I know others have had dry heaves and their wraps have remained intact. This was constant retching for about an hour and a half so maybe that made the difference? Also, because at first I thought I was fine, I continued to eat like normal for about two weeks after the episode. I'm really at a loss on this one. I had thought my wrap was extra tight because at the time of surgery Gillian wasn't able to dilate as he typically does.

This week I have been able to graduate from liquids to soft foods. Last night I had some mac and cheese but I feel like it sort of stuck a bit on the way down, drank some water to help it along. This too is a new problem since the dry heaving happened. Before that I had no symptoms at all and wasn't on any meds. No regurgitation for a while now but I'm eating so little (i.e. only about 3 cups of food a day) that I don't know if it is even possible. Not sure if the PPIs are helping, as they never did before the surgery.

At the instruction of my GI doc, I have the dreaded manometry test this Thursday as I'm having difficulty swallowing but have no esophagitis to account for it. Not looking forward to that as I know it makes me gag.
