Hashi's or graves?

I have no thyroid reading numbers presently, but my internal dr said He believes I have hashimotos disease which I tested positive for. he did send me to an endocrinologist from which I just returned. Endo dr did confirm the has hshimotos diagnosis,mbut is also doing blood work for Graves' disease. How can a person have both?

I have no results given to me but I have had bloodwork, an uptake and am scheduled for an ultrasound. Endo dr has not made diagnosis..also mentioned it may be caused from a nodule which I also have.

Can it be a mixture of hashis, nodule and/or graves causing hyper thyroid? I do know my TSH level shows hyperthyroid.

Hi,
Hashimoto's disease can cause both hypo and hyperthyroidism, if you have a positive test for TSIab , then you can be hyper also, since TSIab attach to TSH receptor of the thyroid cells and stimulate them, exactly like TSH .

Regarding nodules, some times they release hormones independently and cause hyper as a result .

Graves is the most common cause for hyperthyroidism. Both Hashi's and Graves are autoimmune diseases. Graves usually doesn't mess with your thyroid antibodies like Hashi's does.

Hello,
people with hypo can have a bout of hyper prior to being hypo as well as people with hyper can have a bout of hypo prior to being hyper. Also, people can have both hypo and hyper.
Another note, Grave's and Hoshimoto's have separate antibodies. It is good you are being tested for both.

How do I know which is active? Having Hashimoto's, does that mean I will end up hypothyroid sooner or later, or can meds keep me at an even range? I do have a couple of nodules on thyroid to be biopsied in 3 weeks- doc not overly concerned. I have been on Tapazole one week 10 mg.

Awhile I was losing weight. Now I am holding it on my own,..no gain, no loss. Hand still trembles but night sweats gone and I am sleeping better. Wondering what my future holds. I am 65 yo female.

I'm glad you are sleeping better. Perhaps the hand trembling will be resolved too, hope so.

I usually take my Tapazole in the evening but forgot it so took it the next morning on an empty stomach. Later that day I felt so exhausted, heavy, tired. Don't think I will do that again. I have read it's important to take it the same time and same way as far as with or without food. I understand that better now.

I am still confused about one thing. I hear so much about Hashis leading to hypothyroid. But when you have Graves' disease, does your thyroid go to hypothyroid also? So win or lose, with hashi's disease, you will gradually become hypothyroid even if you start out with graves. I know RDI will make you hypo, but what if graves is treated with meds.....can you go into remission with graves?

In reading this over, it may not make much sense...I am just having a prob figuring out the best scenario for my future....it is not in my hands but at am just curious.

If you have positive TSIab then you go into hyper not hypo , since TSIab stimulate the thyroid gland to produce more hormones just like the TSH .

However , with hashi you can end up with either hypo or hyper .

Graves (hyper) can be treated with anti-thyroid medications like methimazole.
