TECHNIQUE: Ultrasound of the thyroid bed was performed.

COMPARISON: None available.

FINDINGS: The right thyroid lobe measures 5.8 x 1.9 x 1.8 cm for a volume of 10.3 cc. Hypoechoic
possible cystic nodule with a punctate echogenic focus in the mid right lobe measures 6 mm.
Additional similar-appearing nodule in the mid right lobe posteriorly measures 5 mm and there is a
third similar appearing nodule in the mid to lower pole posteriorly measuring 4 mm. There is a small
cystic focus posteriorly in the mid to lower pole measuring 2 mm.

The left thyroid lobe measures 6.4 x 2.1 x 2.4 cm for a volume of 16.4 cc. There is a predominantly
solid mass in the mid aspect of the gland posteriorly measuring 3.2 x 1.7 x 1.8 cm. There is a solid
nodule more centrally in the mid aspect of the gland measuring 0.8 cm. In the lower pole slightly
anteriorly there is a 4-5 mm solid nodule.

No nodules are seen in the isthmus.

IMPRESSION: Bilateral thyroid nodules with slight asymmetric enlargement of the left lobe. Dominant
nodule is in the mid left lobe measuring 3.2 cm and is solid. As sonography does not determine
histology of thyroid nodules, histologic sampling should be considered if not previously performed
and follow up with ultrasound may also be obtained to document stability.

Hi candygirl,

Since we are not Endocrinologists we can not give you a diagnoses, we can only give you a direction as to where to go.

As you can read in the impression, you have nodules on your gland, in both sides, one of them is quite large at 3.2 cm, you need to see an Endo who in turn might ask for biopsy of the nodules to determine whether some of them are cancerous, in case you have not yet done one.

I know about two types of nodules, one is more likely to turn out cancerous, but you do not have to worry too much since more than 95 % of nodules are benign, but of course the right next step is to consult with an Endo.

Also you need to determine what is the cause for the nodules, most probably it is an auto immunity disease like Hashimoto's or Graves, you should perform full thyroid panel which include TSH, Free T3 and Free T4, in addition to thyroid antibodies which are antiTPOab, TGab and TSIab.
