Hello from the UC forums! I was recently diagnosed with slight hypothyroidism (TSH around 6.5 -- though I do not show evidence of an autoimmune cause of it). Because I want to try to get pregnant fairly soon, my GP suggested I start medication.
I started 50 mcg of generic levothyroxine about 7 weeks ago and just had my levels checked. My TSH is around 4.3 but my GP wants to bump up my dose to 75 mcg so I'm in a more ideal range for pregnancy.
When I saw my gastroenterologist this week, she was adamant I should be on the brand name Synthroid, however my GP feels that while it's up to me it's perfectly fine to stay on generic if it's working.
My question: as long as I ensure that I am staying on the same manufacturer (in my case Mylan) of the generic version, is that alright to stay on the generic or are there other reasons beyond consistency to opt for the brand?
Thank you!
