I do not take 5ASAs so I don't keep up on it but if this is the first Generic version of Colazal this might be a nice cost effective alternative for some people.

Salix, Watson Launch Authorized Generic Of COLAZAL

 

(RTTNews) - Friday, Salix Pharmaceuticals Ltd. reported an agreement with Watson Pharma, pursuant to which Watson will market and sell an authorized generic of COLAZAL or balsalazide disodium Capsules. Watson plans to unveil the authorized generic product soon. COLAZAL is an anti-inflammatory drug for the treatment of mildly to moderately active ulcerative colitis

WOW!!!! This is big news, Keith-- thanks so much for posting!!!!!!! Original Colazal costs over $400 for a 30-day supply in my area. I've recently been wondering how I could afford it post-retirement when my health insurance benefits decline. Plus another member had posted here a couple months ago that Colazal's original patent would be in effect 'til 2013. / Old Hat (nearly 30 yrs with left-sided UC; currently on 3 Colazal daily for maintenance of remission)

I spend around 400.00 a month ...my drug coverage for 2008 will be 2.500.00  medicare part d ..400. a month plus the other drugs will just eat that up ...the last 4 mos i have been struggling with buying my meds ....thanks tongue

My doctor just prescibed Colazal! I just went through awful hassles with the presciption benefits for Rowasa enemas verses the generic (which didn't work). So I hope that the generic will work for me once I am done with the brand name one.
I guess first I have to see if it works at all! Thanks for the info

Sarann, interesting that you report generic Rowasa did not work for you. This has previously been mentioned by members *Jen* & Trixy's Got Butt Trouble, who both wrote that they went back to using original Rowasa to treat their flares. I have done o.k. with generic ingredients but find the hard-to-squeeze bottles a nuisance. / Old Hat (nearly 30 yrs with left-sided UC ... [etc.])

Is that Generic Rowasa can you get that in the USA ...i go see my GI in 3 week's i will ask my doc if i can try ..because wen i hit that limit on my med coverage they will cover 75% on generic med that would be great ''

RMA - Yes, you can get the generic Rowasa in the U.S. I don't know how much it costs without insurance, but with my insurance, I pay a $10 co-pay for a two week supply.

Yes, the generic Rowasa(mesalamine) is quite cheap and the bottles they put them in are as well. I just had an awful time with the generic one. I am so tired of this. The pharm companies are raking it in for their "brand" name meds. I think it is a shame. I almost despise them as much as the insurance company theives.
