H Pylori and UC flare!!

I've currently been dealing with a 3 month long flare up and now after a gastroscopy and colonoscopy I've been told I have a H Pylori infection. My doc perscribed Flagyl and another antibiotic as well as a PPI drug.

My question is for those who have ever been on Flagyl what side effects were experienced and how bad were they? I'm seriously considering stopping the antibiotics as I've experienced some nasty side effects.. numbness in hands, nausea, can't sleep....

Sorry this doesn't make much sense but I need to vent and I haven't slept in two days...

Thank you for posing this question....I am very interested in the responses as hubby has it too. The Dr wanted to wait until the prednisone was weaned off totally and our cruise is over with before starting him on his regimine for treatment. I also had a blood test done to see if I also have it. If so we will both start the treatment simultaneously. We see her Feb 4th and I will now have your info and others' responses to be more prepared with.

(I am especially annoyed as this was discovered in July 06 by a different doctor from an endoscopy and LEFT UNTREATED unbeknownst to us. The Mayo Clinic Dr discovered it when examining his records and asked us to be sure to follow up on it to see if by chance he was treated and we forgot which I doubted. Untreated it doesn't go away as we now know. I am certainly ticked off as this would have been treated and done and gone away with long before the UC stuff occurred. Now to have to be on a bunch of additional meds to rid him of this and maybe mess with the progress of his UC definitely has me very angry. I am praying that these meds don't put him in a real tailspin.)

One big question for the HW community with experience relating to this is the Pro Biotic issue and trying to keep a balance of the gut flora that might be compromised by the anti biotics????

I had the h.pylori last year and took a triple dose of antibiotics. i also was on prednisone. no side effects from the antibiotics, if anything i actually got out of my flare while on them. but i had other complications so its hard to judge all what each drug did, etc.

I had no side effects from Flagyl except the metalic taste, and I think I got thrush afterwards (though I could be confusing that with a different time and a different drug.)

Whatever you do, do NOT drink alcohol while on Flagyl. You will get violently ill if you do.

Ooooh h-pylori is fun stuff....I had this prior to being diagnosed with UC. My primary dr gave me antibiotics and I really started to feel better and then we were going on vacation for a couple days and we asked if we could continue the antibiotics for a couple more days. He said it was fine but be careful beause it will wipe everything out. Well, it did and to this day my mom is convinced that that was what caused my UC. Anyway, I don't remember any side effects besides the metal taste (which was completely disgusting...) If you are going to stop the antibiotic, definitely be sure to tell your doctor, they might be able to prescribe something else?

Some time ago I posted something on what probiotic(s) to take and I think it was directed to AnotherUCWife, as a matter of fact (maybe a search in this forum on some of the keywords). I believe the gist of it was that studies have shown that probiotics with the antibiotic therapy can be very effective. The study looked at a particular probiotic used in Europe and the equivalent is found in the probiotic milk drink called "Dan Active". Sadly there is often a bunch of sugar in most of these mainstream products, but it may be worthwhile compromise and I think the "plain" version has less added sugar. Try other probiotics too, because a variety may also help and it will lessen the symptoms the antibiotics may cause.

I have taken Flagyl several times and always feel good when I am on it. I think that is the first time I can say that about any medication.

When I first started Asacol, I was also on a 10-day course of Flagyl, so I'm not sure what side effects were from which drug. I had mild headaches that would come and go throughout the day for about 1 1/2 to 2 weeks. I had the horrible metallic taste...everything tasted disgusting, even water. I got dizzy and lightheaded often. If you're having numbness in your handss you should talk to your doctor.

Well the side effects just got too bad so my doc advised that I stop the meds. I stopped the Flagyl 2 days ago and I'm still dealing with the side effects. I have a spots of pain throughout my stomach, sore jaw, dizziness, muscle aches, and a general feeling of unrest. I've taken plenty of antibiotics in my life but I've never dealt with anything like this before. I would be happy to be back were I was 2 weeks ago, just dealing with a flare up. I've been flaring for 3 months and now I feel worse then I have the entire 3 months.

Sorry to hear that the side effects are persisting. Is your doctor going to put you on a different antibiotic to get rid of the H. Pylori? Hope you feel better soon.

thanks for the responses so far....certainly not looking forward to Flagyl which sounds like the antibiotic needed to treat this in particular..I'm not sure the results of my test if we will be doing this on the "buddy plan" Hate to see him have to go through this now since he has more better days than bad. Maybe he'll get lucky and be able to tolerate this and not have it set him back.
