Anyone ever get constipated from enemas?

I've been back on Colocort for 3 days now to stop my bleeding but before then I was having regular bm's (with occasional D) but at least I was going.  But it seems that since I started back on the enemas this time, I don't seem to have as much "output" as "input".  I don't know if I'm constipated or not.  I feel ok - sort of - slightly uncomfortable.  Does anyone else find that enemas constipate you?

I use predfoam and predsol enemas, and also physillum husk but i've never experienced constipation. However i produce lots of jelly like mucus which changes the amount of output depending on how bad my flare is. Could it be that you're in remission and therefore not passing any pus/mucus.

Hi Sherry...it could be inflammation still, or much less inflammation that's slowed the urgency.

Your output should match input...so, if you're not eating as much for the past few days, the out"poo" will be somewhat less.

Do add some fibre maybe to help bulk up the stool...that will help, although it may take a day or two to notice it.

I have this problem with Colcort.  Talk to your dr, my dr allows me to cut back on the dosage if I start getting constipated.

Ok, see now here is where I get confused......Quincy if you can please, enlighten me! When I have bleeding, then I have inflammation right? With inflammation can come constipation yes? Ok, when my ONLY symptom is bleeding and pain upon going, I still have relatively normal bm's. Just a lot of blood - no I don't have hemmies nor a fissure - the GI has checked for these. But when I start Colocort (this has happened in the past as well), all of a sudden it seems that what I'm supposed to be taking for the inflammation is preventing me from going. I just don't understand the logic behind this. Bleeding + normal bms = inflammation? No bleeding + constipation = inflammation? It seems my colon is just not happy unless it's bleeding! LOL or maybe I'm just so foggy headed from this darned cold/chest thingy that I'm not thinking right!

Katydid, how do you mean to cut back on the dosing? Such as a half bottle or did you mean every other day?

Sherry...what are you taking for your chest cold?

It could be that once the spasming in the rectum stops from using the colocort, urgency to go lessens and you aren't going as much... that = constipation? How many times are you going a day? Are you still going or is it that it's changed in consistency or timing?

I sure hope you feel better soon regarding your chest cold.

I'm not taking anything for my cold. Just saline nose spray to help loosen up the nose gunk. I was on Azithromycin though. I can go in the morning (maybe 3 times) but it's really skinny and hardly anything at all.

I'd say you still have some inflammation...not considered constipation, however. Just different than you had before.

Hang tough...hopefully it'll get your flare controlled soon.

I hope your cold clears soon as well....you can consider the neti pot for nasal lavage...

Out of curiosity, I didn't do an enema last night. And wouldn't you know it........I had a normal bm this morning with no blood (the days young yet so we will see what later brings!). So maybe I just didn't need the whole bottle. I know, I'm not out of the woods yet with this flare because I still had the left sided pain when I went, so maybe I will try just a half a bottle tonight to see if it helps. My colon confuses me so much sometimes!

I think that's what you should try...considering how sensitive you are to some of the meds...it's very much worth it.

A small amount could work just as well....others have done the same thing with the 5ASA meds.

What if you tried every second night and then went right away to every third night rather than doing the half a bottle...for now?

The medication is just being sucked up your poor ulcerated colon/rectal area like a water to a sponge. Once the "holes" heal up a bit you will expel more medication. Am I sure of this? no, but I believe it to be true and it is as good a reason as any! I have the same experience so I have thought about this one too. It can cause a kind of constipation in the beginning but it is temporary as you may have found. Also good ideas above about using less sometimes.

So I tried 1/2 bottle of Colocort on the second day (as opposed to every night) because I was doing better but started seeing blood again. Bright red this time. I woke up this morning with the most horrible cramps and major D with the "white knucklers". *Sigh* Now, I think I might try a whole bottle every other night to see if that's any better. I think that soon, my colon is going to have to make out a will because I'm getting ready to kill it! I'm seriously considering surgery but it probably won't be anytime soon. I just know that it's going to be in my future because I can't keep going on this way. It's getting to be too much.

You have had to endure so much that I hope you get some relief real soon. It seems like you just get the meds right and clear things up for a bit, then BAM you have problems again. I can certainly understand considering the funeral for your colon. You need a better quality of life - consitently!
